A team of neuroscientists and sleep researchers has found that rather than improving sleep, consuming an alcoholic beverage before bed can cause a reduction in REM sleep.
Prior research has shown that REM sleep takes up approximately 20% of a typical night's sleep, but is still important. Though scientists have not yet figured out the purpose of REM sleep, they do know that people who do not get enough can experience emotional problems, mental acuity difficulties and memory issues.
In this new study, the researchers explored whether consumption of alcohol prior to sleep might have a positive or negative impact on sleep quality and REM sleep in particular. To find out, they recruited 30 adult volunteers who spent three consecutive days and nights in a sleep lab on two occasions, where their brains could be monitored as they slept.
To assess the impact of having a nightcap before going to bed, the researchers served only a mixer (non-alcoholic ingredients typically used to make cocktails) on one of their stays, and a mixer with added alcohol on the other. Both times the drink was consumed one hour before the volunteer went to bed.
The research team found that drinking just one alcoholic beverage led to an increase in slow-wave sleep across all three nights. It also decreased the duration of REM sleep. Overall, they found that the volunteers were able to fall asleep faster after consuming alcohol, but their quality of sleep suffered due to shortened REM periods.
They also noted that drinking an alcoholic beverage on consecutive nights did not change the amount of REM sleep impacted—their body did not adapt to overcome the effects of alcohol. The team concludes that drinking even a small amount of alcohol before bed can adversely affect sleep quality.

Don’t sell yourself short. God was a teammate.
:)
“A friend of mine was becoming an alcoholic just in order to sleep, seems only alcohol was getting him more than 2 hr/night. He tried lots of otc stuff, none helped. Solution turned out to be 1 indica mj gummie before bed - now he sleeps 8hrs/night. So I tried them too. I do sleep much more deeply but still avg 7hrs same as before, never felt I needed more sleep but deeper sleep better too.”
Are MJ gummies legal in all states? Or are those just legal in the states that have decriminalized MJ? I’m willing to try anything at this point.
Correct there are 2 types of cannabis: Indica & Sativa.
Also my arthritis responded well and almost immediately to Tommy Chong’s CBD oil (pricey and multiple versions now).
He has a YT story similar to Gen. Flynn (railroaded by the feds) and it led indirectly to his CBD oils.
Where can I buy the product from a reputable business? I googled it and didn’t get a hit for indica gummie without THC. They all had some amount of THC”
That was my next question. I’m wary of just ordering something such as that online or buying at a “hole in the wall” type business.
In other news, 72 deg and 45% humidity is perfect for guitars and sleep.
Get a humidifier.
Legal in almost half the states. Indiana (other states too) has a much weaker product called delta-8. They make it from hemp which is only 1% THC. Hemp was made legal during wwii for naval/military needs bc it makes good rope. Delta-8 is highly refined to make the product stronger although most claim it gives them headaches ~ where the term smoking rope originated. Worse even though legal it has TH and you will fail drug tests for up to 90 days even.
If you check, driving to the nearest legal state for the real deal is worth it, will usually allow you to use your DL to purchase, cash basis only though...
Or see a doctor for medically approved use.
Ah, see I’m probably wrong. I am probably thinking of “Essential oils” a different pot-related product with no THC. I’ll have to ask the neighbor to clarify, and tell me how much THC, perhaps it’s negligible, what was the amount? Pot around here runs from about 22% to 34% THC, IIRC, too strong IMO.
Prior post TH = THC.
Also most all mj products have some THC but CBD oils are clean or so minute that you can still pass the piss test.
Congratulations! My birthday is Feb. 17, ODAAT.
“… A team of neuroscientists and sleep researchers has found that rather than improving sleep, consuming an alcoholic beverage before bed can cause a reduction in REM sleep...”
This has been known for at least fifty years. It is one of the habits we cautioned our patients about when I first got involved in sleep disorders in 1983. It was well know long before that.
“Also most all mj products have some THC but CBD oils are clean or so minute that you can still pass the piss test.”
Well, I guess that is good to know. However, unless my physician checks for that on my yearly lab-work, I can’t imagine any situation in which I would have to do a piss test. I’m retired, don’t drink and drive, and haven’t smoked any MJ in over 40 years. Dang! I’m getting old! Now, THOSE were the days!
But, all kidding aside, I wouldn’t want to take something to help me sleep that would cause a problem if such a situation were to arise.
Same here, with added tinnitus, and a very loud water pump in basement that kicks on after someone flushed. Topped off with MIL ‘s FISHpump FISHpump FISHpump oxygen machine downstairs.All. Night. Long.
Drinking keeps me as sane as a crazy grumpy bastard living with Karens can be.
Drinking is the only thing that keeps my Michael Stipe nightmares at bay.
WSWYDT 🙂
Why is R.E.M. tormenting you?
Yes, I must be slow in the mind, tonight.
I’m going back to my night swimming, now.
Bttt
You read like an ad. for that product Mike Huckabee promotes....still - glad you get a good sleep !
