The Burger King cook who never missed a day of work for nearly 30 years and received a measly gift for his dedication has bought his first home with the more than $400K raised from the now-viral clip, saying it was a Christmas miracle.
Kevin Ford closed on his new Pahrump, Nevada, home on Dec. 13, paying $177,000 for the 846-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath house, sharing the news with his followers on social media, according to TMZ. “I wanted to show you something, something you made possible, you did for me, just a hardworking guy,” Ford said in a video posted to Instagram on Dec. 29. “Now I know it needs some work, gonna cut off the haters already, I know it’s not a mansion but it’s mine.”
Ford had celebrated his 27th anniversary with the fast-food franchise without missing a single day of work. The chain, however, gifted him a backpack with a movie ticket, a Starbucks cup and a mix of candy and chocolate.

I hope he can keep his house at his wages.
Good for him. Burger King either should have done it right or not done it at all.
1. Most of his money came from white donors. Whites (liberal and conservative) love seeing a hardworking, law-abiding black man. Blacks donated far less. Asians not at all.
2. Were this a white Burger King worker, whites would have donated far, far less. Blacks not at all.
$400K raised. House price was 177K. Likely bought it outright. And a good chunk of change for renovation and living expenses.
You’re right. That said, I’m happy for Kevin Ford. “All work is noble”.
If he raised $400,000, he’s going to be fine. Even if he just left that money in the bank and used it to offset his living costs, it will outlast him.
At least until he’s required to own nothing and be happy.
How is this taxed by IRS? Does fedgov get their cut before distribution?
Burger King’s Whopper used to be a great burger. It has shrunk in size and the ingredients are stale. They suck anymore. Stopped eating there years ago. Even my grand kids don’t like it and that’s saying something.
Supposedly it’s considered a gift and not taxed but I would not be suprised if Brandon and his 87,000 IRS agents changed that.
If I want to gift to my child, there is a limit on that gift of I think $15K per year. Anything above the limit is taxable. Why would an anonymous ‘gift’ from strangers not be subject to same? Or perhaps as long as the gift from each stranger is not beyond the limit?
The latter applies.
Should be hit by the gift tax. So about a third or 280k left. Then state taxes take another %. So maybe he ends up with 220k.
I miss Whataburger... :/
“Burger King’s Whopper used to be a great burger. It has shrunk in size and ...”
Very true. My sentiments exactly. Used to love the Whopper in college.
In the Middle East it is still the Whopper of your memories. About the size of an outstreched hand with quality, fresh ingredients and real milkshakes. A few years ago this is what I had in Amman, Jordan. Cost around $9 for the Whopper w/ Cheese meal.
Have to go to one of those boutique places to get this now. For about $30.
So, you’re not crazy.
Thanks… I thought there would be gov getting their cut.
Sounds better than a ‘Royale with cheese’. ;-)
I believe the fed tax guys can be avoided by sending 10% to the Big Guy.
The gift tax is taxed to the giver.
It also only applies to large donations; I believe $25k. This is not a large gift. Rather it is lots of small gifts.
I do believe gifts to this platform do not qualify as tax deductible, so that’s where you get taxed.
846 Sq foot, 3 bedrooms?
I can’t recall what the “reward” was but one of my coworkers had served General Dynamics for, if I recall, twenty years. In passing, his boss flicked his wrist sending the reward, a medallion, I think, flying onto the employee’s desk. He followed it up with something like, “Get those TPS reports on my desk by noon.” After the boss had gone into his office two nearby employees came over and we all stood there for several seconds. I felt embarrassment having witnessed such disrespect for the best employee in the department.
There was some low-voiced conversation about what an asshole the boss was. One of the guys shook the employee’s hand and congratulated him. The honored employee said something along the lines of, “The delivery makes it feel kind of hollow, doesn’t it?”
There was a catalog where you could select something based on how many years of service, but I looked through it and there was nothing there I’d want.
