Bodycam video shows LA sheriff's deputy fatally shooting woman, 27, FOUR times in front of child

Newly-released bodycam footage shows the moment an LA Sheriff's Deputy shot a mother who had called 911 after her ex-boyfriend allegedly attacked her and her daughter.

Niani Finlayson, 27, called police and 'reported that her boyfriend would not leave her alone' and then screaming and sounds of a struggle could be heard', the LA Sheriff's Department (LASD) said.

Footage shows deputies swiftly approaching the apartment complex and soon saw Finlayson holding an eight-inch kitchen knife at the door.

She reportedly told the officers that she was going to stab her ex-boyfriend for allegedly hurting her nine-year-old daughter, Xaisha.

Xaisha was seen standing next to her and appeared to tell deputies that her mother's ex-boyfriend had hurt her.

While entering the apartment, Deputy Ty Shelton is seen asking the officer in front of him for her taser, which she quickly hands over.

The female officer and Shelton enter the apartment together and see Xaisha standing near the kitchen while Finlayson is standing next to her ex-boyfriend, with one hand on him and the other holding the knife.

At that moment, Shelton shoots four times while holding the taser in another hand, and Finlayson immediately falls to the floor.

Once her mother is shot, Xaisha runs to the kitchen while the ex-boyfriend yells 'No, no, why did you shoot?'.

Shelton is heard responding: 'Drop it'. It is unknown what he was referencing.

Please consider this. Free Republic is a conservative site (obviously). Except for perhaps a few trolls, we are all law-and-order types. We want to support the police.

Yet many of us here (including me) are skeptical. Something has changed since I was a young man. Police are now ruder, and more willing to escalate. Maybe something is wrong with today’s cops. Or perhaps something is wrong with today’s society that is producing that behavior.

But something is definitely wrong.

Not I. Usually I am on the side of the police in these controversies. But we must be willing to admit that sometimes police do make mistakes. I believe this is one of those times.

Holding a knife should not carry a death sentence. If the woman had been rushing toward the officer with the knife raised, then that is another matter.

It’s a dangerous job. Cops get killed if they are not aggressive enough.

This woman appeared to be emotionally out of her mind. The officer had no choice but to stop her aggression with a deadly weapon. Sad ending to a domestic situation out of control.

Everyone makes mistakes and there’s bad people everywhere including cops...they’re a very small minority but exist. Overall cops do a great job but are hampered by dumbass laws.

From the article;
“ Following Finlayson’s death, it emerged that Shelton had previously killed 61-year-old Michael Thomas on June 11 2020 in a similar case.”

“ Was it necessary to kill the woman ”

Yeah, maybe he could’ve just winged her or shot the knife out of her hand.

get real, A person with a knife is just as dangerous as a person with a gun in some situations, it takes just a second, momentary loss of focus and one of the cops could be dead.

If she were a cat, he’d have to shoot her 9 times to kill her.

Even with zombies, you usually only have to kill them a second time.

After what happened in the summer of 2020 I don’t understand anyone who still supports police. Across the entire country they stood by and watched our cities burn at the behest of their corrupt mayors, and funnelling groups of “back the blue” types into throngs of antifa to be beaten as they looked on, doing nothing. They’re now as militarized as the army with tanks, helicopters, plate carriers, full auto M4s, etc. They don’t even wear police uniforms anymore. They dress and act like occupying soldiers and occupying soldiers like to bully and kill.

The only thing they serve and protect anymore is their pension.

It looks as though the woman was not close to the cop.

If it was her ex-BF wielding the knife, I don’t think there would be any controversy.

Part of it is the large number of woman cops. Woman tend to be pretty hair trigger and the training is enhanced for them because they tend to be smaller than the men and not so strong. women cops in a street role as opposed to office are a bad idea but “equity” requires lots of bad ideas.

She was very close to the “boyfriend.” Being dropped into that situation without context would be a tough one. I wouldn’t want to ride herd on that demographic.

No reason to kill her 4 times. Once is enough for humans.

Four shots in well under a second. One shot is often not enough.

Police are taught to keep firing until the threat is down and no longer a threat.

It is always easier to evaluate things after the fact, than it is in the middle of the situation.

If she had stabbed her boyfriend, the cops would be criticized for not shooting.

Wonder if the usual suspects will gin this one up into riots/looting. They may be too busy supporting Hamas.

“But something is definitely wrong.”

There’s been a slow shift in our culture and it’s everywhere. I commented to an employee as we passed a school bus stop that the parents were waiting for the children even though all the children had to so was walk a hundred yards home. He told me that if the parent wasn’t there then the driver would not let the child get off the bus. He’d take them back to the school and the parent would have to drive to the school and pick them up. That’s a level of authoritarian control that’s borderline insane. Another change is I’ve seen people shoplifting in my local Walmart. I’ve tried to alert and employee and they ignore me. It’s not just the police who have changed. The changes are widespread and across society. We are changing from people who are self-actualizing and responsible to some kind of group identity that isn’t healthy. I, the school, am responsible for the safety of your child, except at school where I will punish him for defending himself from assault. I, the employee, am not responsible for protecting my employer, especially if the thief is someone of color. God, I miss the past.

I have spent 33 years in law enforcement… and I can tell you that the taser is not 100 percent effective…and if you attempt a taser deployment and it doesn’t stop her… and she stabs someone or you… that’s a problem…. The reason taser leads at 24 feet is because someone can cross that distance in the amount of time it takes an officer to process and pull out his firearm to defend himself or someone else…. Knives are lethal weapons… and are therefore responded to as such. I understand the need for de escalation training… but untill yih have another officer on scene as backup… you are responsible for the safety of the person she is standing next to… and like I said… tasers are not 100% effective. And jt fails… and she stabs someone… it’s on you …
