Plans abounding for new sports stadiums across the US, carrying hefty public costs

Standing on a portable stage erected at home plate of the Milwaukee Brewers ballpark, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers recently praised the professional baseball team as an “essential part” of the state's “culture and identity” and “economic success.”

With fanfare, Evers then signed off on $500 million in public aid for the stadium's renovation, adding to a remarkable run of such blockbuster deals. This year alone, about a dozen Major League Baseball and National Football League franchises took steps toward new or improved stadiums.

A new wave of sports facility construction is underway. One driven, in part, by a race to keep up with rivals and one that could collectively cost taxpayers billions of dollars despite skepticism from economists that stadiums boost local economies.

Though the Brewers primarily cited a need for repairs, many of the other new projects are much more than that. In some cases, sports teams are even seeking a new jolt of public funding for state-of-the-art stadiums while public entities are still paying off debt from the last round of renovations a couple of decades ago.

I pretty much just watch highlights, at this point I can’t justify spending three hours doing anything.

No tax money should be used for sport stadiums. They need to be investing in making their city a safe and desirable place to live.

A federal ticket tax could be used to fund local K-12 education.

A lottery to fund vouchers, why not?

If the people are dumb enough to vote for a tax fund private business, let them be taxed to fund the billionaire businessmen.

It’s the Democrat reprise of the old Roman “Bread and Circuses” ploy.

True. We should be more productive with our time. And Sports are not what they used to be.

And the worst part is enduring all the woke commercials.

Taxpayers get ripped off and the only ones who prosper and afford to enjoy it are rich people.

Let rich people pay the costs.

Do any of these Stadium deals still use personal seat licenses to raise money to build the stadium?

I recall hearing about personal seat licenses years ago, From what I heard , public money was not needed to build a stadium, because the people who were buying tickets to the games would be paying for the new stadium. The personal seat licenses of many thousands of dollars per seat, supposedly created a pool of money in the hundreds of millions of dollars to build the stadium.

It seems that we are in a sports world nowadays , in which team owners want to build new stadiums and arenas about every 20 years. Stadiums just don’t seem to be state-of-the-art very long anymore.

Jaguars haven’t ever put one thin dime in my pocket.....although not recently, they’ve taken out a few.
If that team moved tomorrow it wouldn’t bother me in the least.......as a matter of fact I might get drunk for joy.

Just a review of current events, they now have TWO players that have been arrested recently for domestic violence.

So, as far as I’m concerned, all this crap the nfl spouts about justice, end racism, end hate and the rest if it is nothing more than virtue signaling BS.

These stadium deals have nothing to do with sports anymore. Now, they are typically just the centerpieces of large real estate development and redevelopment projects.

Green Bay doesn't need a new stadium because it's not a major metropolitan area looking to revive a downtown area or build a massive new suburban commercial and entertainment complex.

I read that sports stadiums are mostly empty these days. Former fans are sick of all the Pride events and kneeling to BLM.

I didn’t want to see the superbowl in jax the 1st time.

I could not care less.

On a personal note, for some reason the superbowl hasn’t ever exciting me in the 1st place and when my Dad passed away on superbowl Sunday 2010 I really REALLY don’t care.

Nope, maybe outside of the Carolina Panthers, because they just flat-out suck, most NFL games are sold out.

I basically have only tuned into the 4th quarter of recent Super Bowls if the games were close.

I can’t even bear to watch the commercials, because now they are so woke, and forget about the lame halftime shows.

Ticket prices have been raised to the roof
such that
normal working American citizens are priced out of attendance

as such, any new stadii serve no genuine public purpose (even if we like sports) ...

if there are to be new ones, the owners... as good capitalists...should finance them themselves!
