Vancouver EV owner shares cautionary tale after car deemed ‘total loss’
VAncouver CityNews ^ | Dec 11, 2023 | Pippa Norman

An electric vehicle owner in Metro Vancouver is questioning the sustainability of EVs, after his basically new car was written off due to the cost of repairs.

Kyle Hsu is hoping his story serves as a warning to prospective EV buyers. He says he was left frustrated and saddened by what seemed to be an innocuous incident that scratched the underside of his car’s battery.

........

Due to the damage, Hsu says his eight-year warranty was deemed void, and the entire battery needed to be replaced at a cost of $30,000.

Following the advice of the dealership, Hsu says he took his car to his insurance provider, ICBC, to see how much of the cost he could claim under his policy.

However, a few days later, Hsu says he received a call from ICBC quoting him $60,000 to replace his car’s battery — $10,000 more than the car cost.

Be assured, everyone’s insurance will rise to subsidize EV owners insurance claims!

I am quite surprised that diesel hybrids aren’t as numerous as bunnies!

A small diesel engine is a natural battery charger! Powerful, quiet, relatively inexpensive.

WHASSAMATTER, AUTO INDUSTRY?

that is a pretty broad generalization. Not all EV are created equal.

The resale value of an older EV and hybrid is less than 40% of the original retail price compared to over 50% to 60% of a gas powered vehicle.

You willing to purchase a used, 10 year old EV or hybrid knowing that you're ultimately going to have to replace the batteries?

Automakers probably don’t think there is a market for it. I’d probably buy a diesel hybrid over a gas hybrid. It seems to be a good match.

I've been saying this for well over a decade now. Diesel electrics are proven tech. Diesel engines are also more efficient than traditional gasoline engines. Imagine how efficient they'd be running at their optimum rpm all the time, with none of that start/stop stress on the engines. You could probably still get the efficiency with a small onboard battery that would primarily be used for starts.

The problem is, "environmentalists" (who are normally just commie watermelons) hate diesel engines.

Absolutely !

ICBC in British Columbia is goverment insurance which already subsidizes reckless, high cost drivers.

Subsidizing woke EVs is automatic.

Sounds like a huge aftermarket EV skid-plate opportunity! 3/8 inch thick steel should do the job.

There’s no way the guy ran over something that scratched the bottom without seeing or hearing it. Also, I bet the battery can’t be protected well enough without adding too much weight.

Who is liable if someone is driving an EV in the woods and it self-immolates and causes a huge forest fire?

Given your FR handle, you should appreciate this. The auto industry does not sell diesel cars in the US because American consumers don’t want them, because the FedGov taxes the hell out of diesel fuel, on the grounds that only corporations buy it and corporations won’t complain, they’ll just pass the cost on to their customers. So the natural fuel economy advantages of a diesel engine are wiped out by the taxes on the fuel it burns.

“Diesel electrics are proven tech.”

Yep, in locomotives and subs for how long? Also, wouldn’t a diesel electric eliminate the need for a transmission? Not a bad deal.
