I am quite surprised that diesel hybrids aren’t as numerous as bunnies!
A small diesel engine is a natural battery charger! Powerful, quiet, relatively inexpensive.
WHASSAMATTER, AUTO INDUSTRY?
Automakers probably don’t think there is a market for it. I’d probably buy a diesel hybrid over a gas hybrid. It seems to be a good match.

I've been saying this for well over a decade now. Diesel electrics are proven tech. Diesel engines are also more efficient than traditional gasoline engines. Imagine how efficient they'd be running at their optimum rpm all the time, with none of that start/stop stress on the engines. You could probably still get the efficiency with a small onboard battery that would primarily be used for starts.
The problem is, "environmentalists" (who are normally just commie watermelons) hate diesel engines.
Given your FR handle, you should appreciate this. The auto industry does not sell diesel cars in the US because American consumers don’t want them, because the FedGov taxes the hell out of diesel fuel, on the grounds that only corporations buy it and corporations won’t complain, they’ll just pass the cost on to their customers. So the natural fuel economy advantages of a diesel engine are wiped out by the taxes on the fuel it burns.
