The clearest sign that Brock Purdy is a big-time NFL quarterback?
We’ve stopped freaking out that Brock Purdy is an NFL quarterback, period.
Because he’s not supposed to be one—at least not according to the edified minds who assemble professional North American football teams, who repeatedly passed over Purdy until San Francisco took him, dead last, 262nd overall, the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft.
It’s a selection so desultory it comes with a tongue-in-cheek nickname that isn’t really tongue-in-cheek: Mr. Irrelevant.
Last year Purdy’s story was: Wow, Mr. Irrelevant is actually starting games as a rookie for the Niners.
Then it was: Mr. Irrelevant is pretty good!
Now it’s: Is Mr. Irrelevant actually going to win league MVP?
Purdy faces sturdy MVP competition, including Baltimore’s dazzling Lamar Jackson, who was stellar as the Ravens beat Jacksonville Sunday night. There’s Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, and possibly Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. There’s Dallas’s Dak Prescott, should he rebound from Sunday’s long, losing afternoon against the Buffalo Bills.
There’s also running back Christian McCaffrey, an all-around playmaker on Purdy’s Niners team—though non-quarterbacks tend to be disadvantaged in MVP votes (Adrian Peterson was the last non-QB to win, in 2012).
It’s Purdy who has the inside track after a stellar performance Sunday in which he threw for four touchdowns and 242 yards in a 45-29 defeat of Arizona. Despite taking a heavy hit in the second quarter which caused him to miss a handful of plays, Purdy recovered to steer San Francisco to its sixth straight win and an early clinch of the NFC West division.

Ping!....................
Tom Brady was pick #199. Guess he wasn’t expected to be much of a QB either.
God works in mysterious ways..................
Will the NBA?........................
You can forget about Dak, after yesterday’s game.
He never was in the running, no matter what the pundits say.
Unless there’s a complete 49ers collapse, it’s going to be Brock Purdy..............
Brock Purdy is not the same NFL QB were it not for Kyle Shannahan, who is a brilliant QB coach developer.
Teams didn’t “miss” on Purdy, he was fortunate enough to be drafted into the perfect situation.
Joe Montana was taken late in the 3rd Round. But Bill Walsh knew Montana was his guy.
Kurt Warner was undrafted!
Brock Purdy is the real deal. He has no problem proclaiming his faith. He is humble and yet he has a quiet swagger about him. Some people describe him as baby face assassin and also half droid due to his reading defenses real quickly.
But they’re first round pick couldn’t do it and got traded.
“Must be awful nice to throw to Deebo, Aiyuk and McCaffrey. “
And a Pro Bowl tight end.
The kid is surrounded by world class talent, even the coaching. And defense. And offensive line.
Yet, it’s he that throws the ball accurately with Montana-esque touch...seemingly always finding the open guy in traffic. And very, very rarely throwing an interception.
Give credit where credit is due.
The kid is a star QB. Maybe generational star.
” he was fortunate enough to be drafted into the perfect situation.”
Then he delivered beyond any expectation.
Trey Lance? Who’s he?! As for Purdy he has proven over the last two season that he is the real deal.
I can begin by listing all of the records Purdy has accomplished so far, but I think we already know them. I’ll mentioned one, avg passing yards per game is 9.9 A quarterback is considered great if he can avg. 7.5. My opinion about his false nick name is the NFL does not want a guy like him to be the face of the league. What’s refreshing are the analysts (former players) who don’t care what Purdy looks like and what his family is. They understand that this young man has a remarkable gift from God.
The Cowboys did not show up to play yesterday. A lot of people are jumping on the Bills reborn bandwagon. And truthfully they just beat KC and Dallas back-to-back, and really should have beaten the Eagles too. But I'm remembering that midseason swoon.
I can't see Hill as MVP... by definition a receiver needs the QB to get him the ball so he's always a level below the QB in my mind. McCaffrey I could see. Even Josh Allen. The Christmas Day game between the Niners-Purdy and the Ravens-Jackson should be very interesting.
Lot of people are saying that but it wasn’t the perfect situation for Trey Lance. Or Jimmy Garrapalo..... and I think they tried another QB in there too before Purdy got his shot.
