Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was fact-checked by Community Notes, a service on X, after PETA claimed in a viral post that turkeys would never eat humans at Thanksgiving.
"We’re lucky turkeys would never do this to us - you don’t have to do it to them, either," PETA wrote in a caption to a post that has received over 26.7 million views online. The picture attached to the post depicts a family of turkeys sitting around a human turkey at the center of the table.
"Turkeys are not vegetarians," according to the Community Note. "Turkeys eat mice, lizards, frogs, and just about anything they can fit in their mouth. If turkeys were larger or had the technological means to farm and eat humans, their current diet reveals they likely would."
PETA's post was mocked by political commentators online.
"Do you ever post about how many birds are killed by wind turbines?" Republican strategist Scott Presler wrote.
Other users congratulated Community Notes for calling out PETA.
"PETA got community noted and it’s one of the best," Tousi TV founder Mahyar Tousi wrote.
"All time champion community note," Cato Institute vice president Scott Lincicome wrote. "Will never be topped."
PETA President Ingrid Newkirk responded to the backlash over the post in a statement to Fox News Digital.
"The last laugh is on people who cannot read, because PETA did not say that turkeys are vegetarians - we said that they would not eat humans and we should show them the return courtesy," Newkirk wrote.
Newkirk has previously updated her will to include a request for her flesh to be cooked, and for her body parts to be transformed into activist messages post-mortem.

Or how cruel and unnatural it is to force their carnivore pets to be vegan?
If you had a human drop dead inside a turkey enclosure, the birds would peck the corpse apart in short order.
PETA has slaughtered animals they said they were saving.
F them.
“those who don’t eat meat leave more for those who do” applies. like a ice vehicle, gas range or gun...if YOU don’t want one then don’t have one. if YOU don’t like someone else having one, MYOFB! big or small, all dictators are eventually disposed of by society. don’t be a DICKtator.
I think PETA has never seen a coyote kill a turkey....
Animals eat animals and plants for the energy it gives them. It’s the law of nature. Denying the law of nature is insanity.
A coyote got a big surprise as he grabbed my sons turkey decoy by the neck.
The next surprise was a turkey load of number 5 shot. Killing him in as he tried running off with the decoy.
I never have, either, though my wife once saw a coyote chasing a road runner outside Prescott, AZ. They ran into some brush, so she didn’t see the outcome. The coyote didn’t appear to be using any Acme devices.
When you have chickens you quickly come to appreciate that they (and turkeys) really are latter day dinosaurs. Merciless eating machines.
I prefer the relationship to these raptors as it exists now.
Long pig for Thanksgiving again!
The circle of life and the natural food chain requires the consumption of eating things that were or are alive. Plants are or were living when consumed by humans, animals, and insects.
Look at the oceans and every species that ever existed of which only 1% is still alive today.
In the animal kingdom there is predator and prey. Both are given skills and natural abilities to survive. Humans are usually at the top of the food chain. Ironically it’s the smallest organisms that can kill humans en masse. The black plague killed over 100M.
“When you have chickens you quickly come to appreciate that they (and turkeys) really are latter day dinosaurs.”
Yep, feathered dinosaurs. And they attack small critters even mice in mass like Velociraptors. :)
I thought I'd landed in cannibal territory.
PETA is a butcher of the human condition.
I was at Ft. Riley in 1967.
