Mom dies after taking Ozempic to lose weight for daughter's wedding

An Australian mom who wanted to slim down in time for her daughter's wedding has died after taking anti-diabetic drugs known for inducing dramatic weight loss.

Trish Webster started taking Ozempic—the trade name of an injectable medication called semaglutide developed to treat type 2 diabetes—after struggling to lose weight through traditional means, her husband Roy Webster told "60 Minutes Australia." The 56-year-old, who did not have diabetes, saw a TV ad for Ozempic and obtained a prescription from her doctor in 2022 after learning that significant weight loss was one of the drug's side effects.

"Her daughter was getting married, and she just kept mentioning that dress that she wanted to wear," Roy recalled. "So, she went into drastic measures."

Trish was on Ozempic before switching to Saxenda, a liraglutide injectable that helps with chronic weight management, according to Roy.

He said Trish lost 35 pounds in five months, but also experienced severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. As Roy explained, "It was one big nightmare from there."

The situation took a turn on Jan. 16, when Roy noticed "brown stuff" coming out of Trish's mouth.

"I realized she wasn't breathing," he remembered, "and I started doing CPR."

Unfortunately, his efforts were to no avail and Trish died that night. Per 60 Minutes Australia, her cause of death was listed as acute gastrointestinal illness on her death certificate.

My next door neighbor was looking rather poorly and was acting like she was very unwell.

She had been taking Ozempic and it caused her blood pressure to go dangerously high. She went to the hospital several times.

She discontinued use and now she is fine.

She looked good for a 56-year-old.

All she needed was to go on a diet and a fitness plan if she wanted to get skinny. But that requires work. And time.

Sad. Any family would rather have a live chubby mom, than a dead skinny mom. Family loves you just the way you are, unconditionally.

Our granddaughter who’s an RN was talking about this last night. Her dad has full- blown diabetes and uses it and she was talking about people using this for other than what it was intended and this lady is an example of it.......so sad

Yep. She discovered the benefits of fasting. She rarely takes a bite.

Sounds like a solid plan. I largely endorse natural/paleo style nutrition.
I add in steel cut Irish Oatmeal and rice as well.

I’m very active and use the fuel.

Your mom was smart about the soda. :)

You could have a sugar free Monster, but that’s probably way worse somehow.

Remember coffee is just coffee, not some Starbucks orange mocha Frappuccino…

“Very active”

We’ve got a half-acre lot with four good size copses of conifers and deciduous trees as well as lots of shrubs and bushes. “Active” doesn’t begin to describe my fall cleanup and the race to get it done before the snow flies. I’ve taken close to 3,000 bags of debris to the dump so far (the dump tells me the weight of what I delivered to them). Slinging that 28 pound backpack blower is a chore as is the final raking, pruning, and bagging. Still going strong at 72 (but a condo is looking more and more attractive!)

Semaglutide is approved by the FDA for use alongside modified diet and exercise to help lower blood sugar and reduce risk of cardiac events in patients with type 2 diabetes, but it has also become a trendy weight-loss drug.

I remember when Speed was the trendy weight loss drug. People swore by it.

One would think…with her fortune, she could have hired a chef to cook tasty, low fat meals….period.
Hired a personal trainer, etc

It was an injection, so the proper dosage was not understood by someone.
