Kidneys or liver malfunction would be my first guess but it is just a guess.
All medication should be checked because sometimes that is it.

Did he use Propecia or Proscar? Both contain finasteride which causes rare reactions in small number of users.

Find out what medicines/supplements he is on. Thyroid is the first thing they should have checked. Insulin causes weight gain. keep us informed.

like Baylor or Vanderbilt. I would think UT Southwestern instead of Baylor. Houston might be a better choice. I can't think of any reason to go further afield.

Have a pharmacist check any meds he might be taking. My doctor put me on simvestaten for cholesterol. I gained a lot of weight. Since taking myself off the staten I have been steadily losing weight, 40 pounds and counting.
I say talk to a pharmacist because they know more than most doctors about the drugs that are prescribed and the interactions between drugs.
