Toyota's Camry, best-selling car in US, goes all-hybrid

The next generation of the Toyota Camry, the best-selling sedan in the U.S. market, will come with only a gas-electric hybrid powertrain, the boldest move yet by the Japanese automaker to push hybrid technology into the heart of the U.S. market.

The 2025 Camry will combine a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric drive system tuned to deliver more power in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of the car, Toyota said.

Compliance with tougher U.S. fuel economy rules was a factor in Toyota’s decision to make the new Camry an all-hybrid vehicle line, dropping four- and six-cylinder combustion models that made up about 85% of sales in the current model year, David Christ, head of the Toyota brand in North America, told Reuters. Another factor behind the decision was “the performance we were able to get out of the hybrid,” he said. …

It’s such a “winner” that the government has to force it on you, and it still isn’t the best-selling version of the Camry after that option has been available for over a decade? Think about that.

“It’s such a “winner” that the government has to force it on you, and it still isn’t the best-selling version of the Camry after that option has been available for over a decade? Think about that.”

It could have something to do with the fact that there are many who don’t like newfangled gadgets, you know, Luddites. And there lot’s of freepers that fit that description.

But I’m curious, why wouldn’t YOU buy a car that gets way better gas mileage, 600 mile range, more power than one that’s maybe $2500 cheaper. Is it strictly the price difference for you? Even though you may be making up that difference in a couple of years driving, and would also have a higher resale value?

Or is it strictly the notion that the government is “forcing it on you”? I don’t know any laws today that say you have to buy a hybrid.

And to be clear, I’m against any mandates from the government, but if something comes along that’s objectively better I’m sure as hell not going to look askance at it simply because the government likes it too.

In simpler terms, I’m not going to cut my nose to spite my face, as you might be doing.

Liberal pseudo-arguments. If the “newfangled gadgets” which are not so newfangled were what the buyers wanted, then market forces would have had Toyota meet the demand for same.

There used to be non-hybrid cars that met a hybrid’s mileage, and I used to drive some of them. I had no problem driving them as they were all stickshifts.

Stop distracting from the issues, please.

” If the “newfangled gadgets” which are not so newfangled were what the buyers wanted, then market forces would have had Toyota meet the demand for same.”

Well that was my point. Many people are luddites (sadly, especially conservatives) and they are part of the “market”, so they naturally shy away from newfangled devices even if they are objectively better.

But you didn’t answer my question...

“Why wouldn’t YOU buy a car that gets way better gas mileage, 600 mile range, more power than one that’s maybe 7% cheaper. Is it strictly the price difference for you? Though you may be making up that difference in a couple of years driving, and would also have a higher resale value?”

I'm waiting for the true hybrid: electric, gas, and hydrogen.

That will blow up REEEAL good!

Market forces eschewing hybrids is not Luddism. Proof by assertion, and further countenance of usurper Biden’s draconian policies.

I also noticed you using “conservatives” in the third person, as if you yourself are not one.

And I did answer your question, to the effect that I did indeed own and drive cars possessing the qualities you tout. Not even sacrificing range and power.

Have a nice day.

Tell me if it was the size of a Camry, got 52 miles to the gallon, ... including in the city, and had 225 HP?

Exactly what was it that you were driving? Brand, model and year please.

Oh, and I’m definitely a conservative, the rational wing of that party, as opposed to the stick-in-the-mud, luddite wing.🙂

Yep, this one was just playing “last post”. Total liberal tactic. JFTR, the city mileage figures for the Camry hybrid are EPA estimates, and no, the EPA has zero credibility.

Nobody who countenances the emissions policies of the usurper Biden regime is a conservative.

They are all now warrantied for 10 years and they drop in price every year. It’s a trade off....

I doubt it. Most people are against full electric cars. Hybrid gives the best of both worlds. It will be a best seller.

People here act like gas cars don’t have batteries. lol. Idiots. Why in Florida do I have to change out my gas only BATTERY every couple years? People don’t think.

Not lithium ion batteries. This battery is for running an electric starter primarily, is portable, and does not cost anywhere near the worth of the entire car.

And the engine is used to turn an alternator to charge that battery.

If you need to change batteries even as frequently as that, then you need to avoid cheap batteries.

I like hybrids way more than all EV or all ICE.

Best of both worlds, in my opinion. You never have to plug your car into a charger and you can always rely on the gas tank to get you where you are going.

Florida heat drains them. I get a new one every two years. About six years ago I needed a jump 4 times trying to get to the Toyota dealership. No more of that.

I do, too. IC engines used by themselves have to be sized to meet the highest demand the driver will place on them. Hill-climbing, acceleration into rush-hour traffic for example. The rest of the time the engine is loafing along at 15%, but the friction and pumping losses are still there. Efficiency sucks. A much smaller engine working at, say, 75% of capacity will do just fine if the driver can call on a supplementary electric boost for the short time that additional torque is needed. This is somewhat comparable to the current practice of installing a small engine with turbosupercharging to create peak torque when demanded, but turbos have their own drawbacks which, as an early adopter in the '80s, I know much too much about. I won't have a turbo today. I learned my lesson. A hybrid, yes, if I could afford one and it didn't require an associate's degree in computer science to drive it.
