A loyal dog stayed by her dead owner's side for nearly three months on a hiking trail - and the starving pup weighed just 6lb after surviving on insects and chipmunks, and fending for herself in the Colorado mountains.
Rich Moore, 71, and his black and white Jack Russell, Finney, disappeared on a hike on August 19 in Blackhead Peak, located in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado.
The arduous search for Rich and his dog was the 'most comprehensive' in the Sherriff's team's history - and despite having other K9s searching for Finney and handlers calling out his name in the mountains, it did not lead to a sighting.
The missing man's body was then discovered by a local hunter on October 30 in the Lower Blanco drainage basin - and by a miracle, little Finney was still by his side.
Rescuers who had come to collect Moore's body were able to coax loyal Finney away from his remains with a can of dog food - after loyally sticking by for three months.
The gaunt dog was still wearing her purple collar with 'Finney' written on the tag, but the personnel said that she was so skinny it was drooping off of her neck.

Should a 71 year-old be doing that with just a dog? Just askin’.
Good dog!

What an incredible story.
The dog is pretty thin and hope she makes a complete recovery.
I guess he died doing what he loved to do, but I wouldn’t want my dog to suffer for it.
Jack Russells are good hunters of small game.
What should he do? Not hike alone? If you fall a significant distance, a companion won’t help you. If you have a heart attack out on the trail, a companion won’t help you. One of the reasons people like to go out in the mountains and hike is for solitude. To get away from the constant jibber jabber, to have to make every decision jointly. Are you ready to sit down for a few minutes? Should we camp here or over there? Am I walking a little too fast, or a little too slow,? There’s nothing wrong with wanting to hike alone,
Old fool.
Bless the little dog.
Good Dog
yep, he died doing what he loved. too bad the dog had to suffer.
We don’t deserve the love that dogs give us.
“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to hike alone...”
Apparently there was for him.
Amen. God bless you, brother
It’s difficult for small game to hide from a Jack Russell Terrier.. Their sense of smell is incredible!
The story brought tears to both the wife and I. Dogs are special, and this one was very, very special. As lonely as it will be, my prayers are to outlive both my wife and my dog. I want to be there for them for everything.
I knew a guy who had cardiac arrest in his recliner in front of the TV. When they found him Oprah was on. I’d say this guy had the better of it. Should have let someone know where he was going in a bit better detail though.
Just saying.
Good on this guy for enjoying life. Too bad it made his dog suffer for a time, but he came thru too.
