On Wednesday, Luke Combs' cover of the song "Fast Car" won song of the year at the Country Music Association awards – but singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman, who first released the song in 1988, took home the award. With the win – a whopping 35 years after the song was released – Chapman became the first Black songwriter to win the song of the year prize at the CMAs.

That may have been Chapman’s call.“
Would not surprise me, as l recall she a dyke activist
I loved the original composed by Ms. Chapman in 1988, however.
It’s Chapman’s song.
She owns it, and she is cashing the checks.
“I cringe when I hear that dufus hillbilly sing that song.”
It sounds like a parody, like the Blues Brothers singing Stand By Your Man.
“Fast Car” was an immediate station changer.
Ironically, she sounded super slow as if she took some downers before recording that awful “song”.
Song plays 24/7 on country radio…. So theres that
I used to walk by Tracy singing in the subways all around Cambridge & Boston back in the day before she hit it big.
She was quite the street singer in her youth.
Totally agree. It’s always better to hear an upgrade rather than a rehash. Not to hijack the thread, but the Home Free / Lee Greenwood / army band mashup of “God Bless the USA” is so much improved over Lee’s original. Even Greenwood’s vocals are better.
Rest his soul. LOL
That is wonderful. The real artist is usually the last to get paid, after the agents, the managers, the label, the cover group, etc. Hope she has more songs in her.
That’s another good one. I’ll give you one that will start an argument with those old enough to know. - Yes ‘s cover of “America. “
S&G’s whimsical delivery was great, but Yes’s intensity made “America” better, just as Disturbed massively crushed “Sound of Silence.”
Not to mention SRV’s covers of Voodoo Chile and Little Wing.
Disturbed’s cover was great. I was a big Yes fan but l could never make up my mind about “America”. Their take certainly changed the mood of it. On balance l think preferred S&G’s, it seemed more in line with the lyrics. I remember Yes’s being really polarizing.
Good but different for sure
I saw photos at the Daily Mail website (british paper). The CMA show had many weird looking people there. Two people with face tattoos. Others with arm and neck tattoos.
They did not have any current photo of Carrie Underwood who was nominated for 1 song. I guess because of the plastic surgery and steroids that she is too weird looking now.
I always thought the song was a rip off of John Mellencamp’s Jack & Diane. He probably didn’t go after her back then for various reasons. He would’ve looked bad if he did since everyone at the time thought it was the greatest thing ever.
Did Jack & Diane have a fast car?

SRV was on a different plane.
I would agree SRV was more consistent than Jimi. When Hendrix was at his best there was no one Better but he was not always there. Sometimes he needed someone to tell him “knock it off Jimi, that was crap”.
