The large whale skeleton at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, known as "Ms. Blue", is being removed from its foundation.
Officials say the skeleton has been attached to a deteriorating structure after years of exposure to the elements.
The center’s director says the whale will be lowered from its perch in the coming weeks and will remain on display until they can determine what comes next.
At 87 feet long, it was one of the world's longest whale skeletons on display.
A public celebration is scheduled for this Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
Yes, we were there earlier this year, and that display is definitely falling apart. I was struck at the time by how poorly maintained it was.
SAVE THE WHALE SKELETON!
Let’s have a concert!
Call up SAG-AFTRA and get them to come!
Someone call Bob Geldof!........................
How long has it even been up there? I saw it a few years before the COVID.
I thought for sure this had something to do with the Exploding Whale video! (An oldie but goodie)
I think I posted the first FR thread on that. I need to find it.
This is “Ms. Blue”, not BLOOIE!.............
Sounds like this must be a Confederate Whale. Are they melting it down?
I got so much enjoyment out of that.
There was something about it, the hubris of government at all levels, the “hold muh beer” aspect of it, the fact that they thought it would turn it into seagull sized whale nuggets that would be whisked away by flocks of ravenous sea birds.
Instead, it was huge, car-crushing chunks of rotten, stinking whale blubber raining down on spectators running for their lives, you could hear the shrieks of panic as they fled!
LOL, they were all laughing, hahahahahaha...until the bits of rotting whale began to mist over the top of them, the muted ah ah ah ah ahs as they smelled and felt it, then the large, putrid blobs raining into the low vegetation as they ran for their lives!
I often wondered how long it took them to remove the stench from their clothing!
I could easily visualize the meetings at the Public Works, a bunch of guys sitting around saying how do we get rid of this carcass, and one guy says “Why don’t we blow it up into little pieces? Then the birds can eat it! We got lots of dynamite, and it is going to have to be disposed of if we don’t use it!”
Everyone nods...this is interesting. “LET’S DO IT!”
This just hit every square millimeter of my funny bone, and still does...:)
I saw they even named it!
Well, the barbarous humans will put the skeleton of the innocent sea crature on display somewhere else!
Looks like the exposure to the sun and rain would have rotted the bones..................
I saw it when my kids were in 4th or 5th grade, and they are 27 now.
How dare they!
Nah, the bones are white, we’d simply be called racist to save them. Besides, they were very weather-worn and falling apart. They didn’t do anything to preserve them.
“Bringing Up Baby”?
Yes.
This story reminded me of another huge skeleton being demolished.
;-)
It's 75 feet long and has been in the inventory of the museum (in two or three different buildings, over the years) since 1905.
