Top US Marine General, 58, Suffers Heart Attack While Jogging

The United States top officer and commandant, General Eric Smith, was rushed to hospital after suffering a heart attack on Sunday evening while out jogging.

Two defense officials confirmed the incident to USNI News.

General Smith was seen on Sunday greeting runners at the finish line of the Marine Corps Marathon in Arlington, VA before the reported heart attack.

Noah Gray, chief of communications for the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, said:

“Witnesses said that they saw an adult male running, then walk down the street and stumble, falling face-first on the sidewalk.”

“At that time, they called 911 and started chest compressions. Our crews arrived and provided CPR and transported the patient to a nearby hospital,” Gray said.

The US Marines Corps said Lt. Gen. Karsten Heckl, a three-star general, is performing the duties of the commandant.

Yahoo News reported:

Heckl is the deputy commandant for combat development and integration. There is no Senate-confirmed assistant commandant in place.

Smith was confirmed by the Senate on Sept. 21 and was sworn into office the following day. On Friday, Smith told reporters he was working two jobs as Marine commandant and assistant commandant of the service, as his Number 2 officer, Lt. Gen. Christopher Mahoney, had not been confirmed.

Hundreds of general and flag officer nominations are stalled in the Senate over Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s hold on unanimous consent as he protests Pentagon policy that reimburses service members for out-of-state travel for reproductive healthcare, including abortions.

Smith commented on the situation Friday at a Military Reporters and Editors event.

“I am still doing both of those jobs and using my staff as best I can to fill in where the assistant commandant would normally be full-time, because I simply can’t be in two places at once.”

The Daily Mail reported: Smith, a career infantry officer, has commanded at every level, serving multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, including time in Fallujah and Ramadi during heavy combat in 2004 and 2005 in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He later was the senior military adviser to Defense Secretary Ash Carter and in 2019, took over as the deputy commandant for combat development.

In that post, Smith worked with his predecessor, General David Berger, on a broad campaign to transform the Marine Corps to better be able to fight amphibious wars in the Pacific after years of battling terrorist groups in the Middle East.

The plan was lauded by many in the Pentagon and Congress as a critical way for the Marines to prepare for a potential conflict with China.

Smith and Berger argued that the changes would improve the Marine Corps’ ability to fight in contested areas, particularly within striking range of an enemy.

That element is critical in the Indo-Pacific, where thousands of U.S. and allied forces are easily within missile — or even rocket — range of both China and North Korea.

But some of the moves, including the transfer of Marine tanks to the Army, triggered sharp criticism from a group of retired Marine generals.

During a speech at a naval conference in February, Smith defended the decision as critical to modern warfare against highly capable enemies.

Clogged arteries won’t show up in a standard physical nor would they be definitely be noticed in PT.

He’s 58. Many men would chalk up decreased performance to age.
Most Marines I know wouldn’t complain.

Atherosclerosis common issue and requires investigation prior to symptoms. 1/2 of all cardiac deaths occur without prior knowledge of coronary artery disease. His age was a prime age for this! Minimize risk factors, control BP, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight. Depending on family history and other risk assessments a non-invasive cardiac CT scan to screen for potential calcified arteries indicating atherosclerosis should be considered (costs about $100 and not covered by insurance). More testing such as stress testing, nuclear flow testing, or stress echocardiograms (ultrasound of heart) can be utilized to intervene before the potentially fatal event.
In his age group Coronary disease rather than COVID induced myocarditis would be far and away more likely.

Gave our tanks to the army, gave away almost all of the artillery, disbanded the combat engineers, and cut down the number of infantry battalion‘s. Made women into infantry platoon commanders. Wants to part Marines on islands in the south China Sea with rockets, just waiting to get blasted by China. Made everyone take a vax.

Clearly… God struck him down, but had mercy. I hope he understood the message.

Water resistance training is faster, easier to maintain a steady heart rate and not overheat and thus much reduced time to achieve target heart rate and little impact on joints as the body (mostly composed of water) is supported in... water.

Overdoing it in the water can generate high body temp when one gets out of the water— so cooling down after getting out of the water is essential. Sit down take it easy, towel off— no more exercise.

Flotation vest supports the body so the legs and arms can kick against water resistance- and some people put on flippers and webbed hand gloves to increase resistance, carefully.

Well, I for one I’m glad you’re here. Yeah, I’m at that age and I went and got one of those calcium score scans where they shoot you with photons and x-rays and MRIs and then give you an answer. No guarantees, but doing all I can to find out about anything in advance.

“Human joints are not designed to jog long distances.”

Not true. Speaking as a jogger who stared at 14 and is still doing so 50+ years later.

What human joints are NOT meant to do is haul around an extra 80 lbs of fat!

Most Marines I know wouldn’t complain.

Bingo!

And most efficient leaders by definition, especially those in the military, know how to delegate.

10-4 Rhino— making the rifle trained platoons reduced and commanded by non-combat leaders is pulling the base out of the point of the pyramid spear. The Marines were the original spec ops, and are who the spec ops of the Navy anyway, pulled highly trained personnel for their units. Out of these, even so- many could not survive say, BUDS.

I plan on dying with a corndog and a rc cola in my stomach while sitting on the couch. The Last thing I want to do is die tired and out of breath.

Not that it might have saved him, but Fixx did not have a regular physician and had not gone for a routine checkup as his sister had urged him to do, even though his father had his first heart attack at the age of 35 and died of another one at 43.
Also, when he had the attack, he fell in a kneeling position where all his blood pooled below the waist.

It is true, actually.

You’re an outlier. Probably very light and not a mesomorph.

We’re hunters. We walk a lot, stalk prey, and sprint for the kill.

There are ample studies that back this up, if you care to Google it.

No, a lifetime of equestrian activity puts you in the orthopedic surgeons office. Shoulders, legs, arms, and even skull.

A heart attack is a form of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), where there is a significant blockage in the coronary arteries.

The 3 main types of ACS include:

ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)

Non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI)

Unstable angina

“It’s probably just a coincidence that he received the clot shot and suffered a heart attack. I mean it happens all the time to fit Marines.”

It’s probably also just a coincidence... that the PTBs in charge of running and ruining America... mandated that our US Military personnel receive the experimental COVID-19 drug. I mean... they’ve proven in so many other ways that they have only America’s best interests in mind.... right?
