I've studied nuclear war for 35 years -- you should be worried. | Brian Toon | TEDxMileHigh
TEDx Talks ^ | 2/1/18 | TEDx Talks

Posted on 10/29/2023 1:20:08 PM PDT by know.your.why

For the first time in decades, it's hard to ignore the threat of nuclear war. But as long as you're far from the blast, you're safe, right? Wrong. In this sobering talk, atmospheric scientist Brian Toon explains how even a small nuclear war could destroy all life on earth -- and what we can do to prevent it. A professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Brian Toon investigates the causes of the ozone hole, how volcanic eruptions alter the climate, how ancient Mars had flowing rivers, and the environmental impacts of nuclear war. He contributed to the U.N.’s Nobel Peace Prize for climate change and holds numerous scientific awards, including two NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement. He is an avid woodworker. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Exactly. And if one trust in the Lord they know that if it actually does happen it’s simply what he warned would happen anyway.

Yep, because you can have so much control after you worry about it.

"...TED talks strike me as yet another forum in which our narcissistic, half-educated elites can form a big circle jerk and congratulate themselves on how clever they are while enjoying the frisson of catastrophism. They can also assure themselves that they are the Top Men fighting to avert this catastrophe, when in fact they are enriching themselves and screwing the rest of us..."

Revelation 9:13–21 .....”One third of human kind will die.....” Sounds like a serious nuclear exchange possibly an EMP followed by nuclear winter.

“That is nonsense, so I won’t bother watching it.”
You’re correct. From Wikipedia:
“As of 1993, worldwide, 520 atmospheric nuclear explosions (including 8 underwater) have been conducted with a total yield of 545 megaton (Mt): 217 Mt from pure fission and 328 Mt from bombs using fusion, “

Iran now has 100% of the prerequisites for a nuclear weapon including enriched special materials and it would be surprising if they didn’t have a handful ready to go. And very likely that NK has provided technical expertise and even smuggled parts (such as primary detonator assemblies, etc).

Atomic bombs operate by NUCLEAR fission. Hydrogen bombs involve nuclear fusion. Both are “nuclear” in that the atomic nucleus is involved.

After a week in basic, I figured I knew all about war. I told the D.I. “I ain’t gonna study war no more.”

Then I got to learn all about peeling potatoes.

2056 nuclear detonations since 1945. 507 of those were atmospheric.

I grew up in the 50’s with the threat of the Russians nuking us every day. This time around if we do get nuked, I doubt it’s going to be the Russians doing it.

You're correct. The atomic bomb is a pure fission bomb where as a hydrogen bomb is dual stage bomb using a small fission bomb to provide the necessary heat and pressure to trigger the fusion process.

You should take that hypothesis to a university and see if you can get a position studying it for the next 40 years to see if it holds water. I hear that’s a good gig.
