I've studied nuclear war for 35 years -- you should be worried. | Brian Toon | TEDxMileHigh
TEDx Talks ^ | 2/1/18 | TEDx Talks

Posted on 10/29/2023 1:20:08 PM PDT by know.your.why

For the first time in decades, it's hard to ignore the threat of nuclear war. But as long as you're far from the blast, you're safe, right? Wrong. In this sobering talk, atmospheric scientist Brian Toon explains how even a small nuclear war could destroy all life on earth -- and what we can do to prevent it. A professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Brian Toon investigates the causes of the ozone hole, how volcanic eruptions alter the climate, how ancient Mars had flowing rivers, and the environmental impacts of nuclear war. He contributed to the U.N.’s Nobel Peace Prize for climate change and holds numerous scientific awards, including two NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement. He is an avid woodworker. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

“”>I studied nuclear war for 10 minutes and came to a conclusion that it isn’t good. Like really really not good<””

I looked into it also and you are right, there seem to be some negative aspects to it.

Back in the fifties and sixties, we were worried about radioactive strontium 90 in our milk, presumably caused by atmospheric testing of nukes by us and the Soviets.

Atomic bombs are different then nuclear bombs.

But your point is basically correct.

Destroy all life on earth, probably not.

Destroy human civilization, very probable. But we are doing that with no nuclear weapons at all.

The leaders have it all set up so that they and their families will all be in underground bunkers. China And Russia have underground cities. Even Ukraine has miles of underground tunnels. The leaders are looking for population reduction.

Nuclear war works for them.

Yeah, nukes could cause some inconvenience, but according to the great scientist AOC, that’s nothing compared to the devastation SUVs and cow farts are inflicting upon the Earth.

I do agree with that. We have to go as though it will not happen and pray cooler heads prevail.

Interesting. Thanks. Here’s an even more unsettling proposition. The forests are ripe for forest fires because of the undigested debris. So radioactive ash could be spread all over Europe...

And the thousands of nuclear tests? Why didn’t they end the world? If the tear Bomba couldn’t do it, how can a smaller one?
