WORLD FOOD DAY - October 16

World Food Day is held every year on October 16th. On this day, more than 150 countries unite to raise awareness of the issues surrounding poverty and hunger.

According to World Hunger Statistics, 785 million people across the globe do not have enough food to sustain a healthy lifestyle. The number equals about one in nine people in the world. Surprisingly, the majority of hungry people live in developing countries. Poor nutrition causes 45% of deaths in children under the age of 5. That means just over 3 million children a year die because they don't have access to enough nutritious food.

World hunger is a complex issue. Some believe the problem is solvable. World hunger solutions include:

Give people in developing countries access to credit so they can create their own farms

Provide access to education, which is the best defense against poverty and hunger

Some experts believe the answer to world hunger is much more straightforward. They believe the key to ending world hunger is to stop wasting food. The most wasted foods include vegetables, cereals, and starchy roots. These foods are wasted during agricultural production and in the postharvest storage. Food waste increases the need to produce more food. When not enough food gets produced, people go hungry.

Over 150 countries observe World Food Day. In the United States, 450 national organizations sponsor the day. As part of their sponsorship, some of these organizations host World Food Day Sunday Dinners. Des Moines, Iowa also hosts an annual symposium in honor of the day. Across Europe, ministries, universities, and research agencies organize conferences, exhibitions, and media broadcasts. In the past, the Pope has sent a special message for food producers and consumers.

World Food Day events in Africa, Asia, and Latin American include agricultural fairs, debates, folk dances, films, special ceremonies in the schools, and food package deliveries.

You can’t solve the world hunger problem. You can help do your part, though. On World Food Day, donate to your local food pantry. Donate to a world hunger-relief organization. Pay off the school lunch debt in your community. If you know of a family in need, anonymously send them a gift card to your local grocery store. Spread awareness by sharing #WorldFoodDay on social media.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) established World Food Day at their 20th General Conference in 1979. The date of October 16th commemorates the anniversary of FAO founding.

Since 1981 the FAO has selected a specific theme for World Food Day. Recent themes have included:

Hermann Göring was also scheduled to be hanged on that day, but committed suicide using a potassium cyanide capsule the night before.

The Gemara (Chullin 139b) asks, “Where is there an allusion to Haman in the Torah? As it is written (Bereishis 3:11), ‘Have you perhaps eaten from the Tree (Ha-min ha-eitz) from which I told you not to eat?… ” The word Ha-min (“perhaps from”) is spelled (in Hebrew) with the same letters as Haman. At first inspection, this appears to be a simple play on words. Upon reflection, however, we will find that there is more to this “simple allusion” than meets the eye.

On the 16th of Nissan of the year 2488 from creation (1273 BCE), six days after the Children of Israel entered the Holy Land under the leadership of Joshua, their remaining supply of the miraculous "bread from heaven," which had sustained them since shortly after their exodus from Egypt 40 years earlier, ran out. (The manna had ceased falling on the previous Adar 7, the day of Moses' passing.) After bringing the "Omer" offering (see "Counting of the Omer" in Laws & Customs for yesterday, Nissan 15) at the Sanctuary they erected at Gilgal, the people prepared their (unleavened) bread for the first time from the produce of the land.

Then as it turns out, the word for [Haman's] gallows is the same as the (ה) tree, "etz" [עץ].

And then as it turns out, the first place "evil"/רע appears in the Torah, is in the tree of the knowledge of good and evil:

Genesis 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Some people just can't resist. "You are what you eat."

And the first place המן appears, is in that certain tree:

Genesis 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the [המן] tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

Embarrassing! If Adam hadn't have been tipped off by a bad report (Pssst, just so you know..), why would it have occurred to them to hide?

Haman built his own gallows, the 50-cubit high tree that he had intended for that other guy, Mordecai, who would not bow to him.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

The verb "eaten" is at the very end of the verse. Therefore the wording is:

you of the tree [אתה המן העץ], which is to say

YOU -- HAMAN -- THE TREE

And then as it turns out, that adds up to 666, the quintessential numeric representation of evil.

In verse 3:11, and 311 = ish [איש], "man".

It's like that little game of HANGMAN. HAMAN & Sons are simply unable to guess the right letters because never in a million years would they suspect that they are NO GOOD (NG) *inside* (bad seed), even though it's the very name of the game:
