BYD (OTCMKTS: BYDDY) replaced Ford as the world's fourth best-selling auto brand last month, as the latter's sales slumped in Europe and the US, market research firm TrendForce said in a report today.

In August, vehicle sales in 37 markets worldwide totaled 5.55 million units, up about 1 percent from July, according to the report.

The composition of the top 10 auto brands was the same as last month, with Toyota, Volkswagen and Honda in the top three.

I knew Kia Motors back in the 80’s when we supplied US Mil-Spec alternators to them for their copies of the classic 2-1/2 ton army transport truck. Rough and basic was their forte’ then, as opposed to Hyundai’s consumer styling. Some of Hyundai’s top end cars that they don’t export are on a par with Audi or Lexus. With the companies now merged Kia must be improving.

“What brands do they sell?”

No clue. I only know that the only Mecum shows I watch are the ones with muscle cars. I know nothing about performance, but they are works of art (IMHO).

I thought Ford had pretty much left the car business and now sold trucks, vans and SUVs.

Let me see, spend at least half your annual salary on a vehicle the manufacturer will only warranty for about 1/2 as long as it takes you to pay off the loan..

Hey guys we aren’t selling as many cars..

That’s okay we’ll just mark up the ones we do sell so we make more per unit..

Ford has cut their own throats and now are wondering why they are bleeding. Build extremely overpriced cars people don’t want & end good selling cars because they aren’t “green” - then wonder why sales slump!

Let them go out of existence.

The big three LOOSE money on small Inexpensive cars. That’s why.
They also loose even more money on EVs.

Here’s what’s gonna kill them..

Tesla is gearing up to make the ENTIRE Underbody as one casting that takes about 5 seconds to cast. 400-500 parts and hundreds of welds, fasteners, etc down to 1 part that nobody (not even a robot) has to touch.

it’s not a “green” issue, the big 3 were hundreds of billions in debt before the “green” stuff was even invented.

They have been running their business like it’s 1960 for 40+ years.

They have stifled innovation.

Old man Ford reduced prices on cars to make them affordable by simplifying them.
Remember “you can get any color you want as long as it’s black” for the model-T?

Take a look at the history of FORD, who, by the way lead the whole industry in the 1910’s and 1920’s reducing the cost of a car by 3-10x.

Then take a look at what’ Tesla’s doing. Musk has mentioned before that he’s taking plays from the old Ford playbook (back when Ford was innovating).

Did you know FORD originally went for vertical integration? Yes, Tesla is doing that too.

The Tesla success story WONT BE about electric - it will be about 2 things.

1) Simplification of the the car (less parts, less models, reduction of cost to build)
2) Self Driving

Note the above 2 things have NOTHING to do with electric cars you can make a self driving gas car too.

Lastly is the electric drive. We are fast approaching 80$ a KW of battery cost at the pack level. Perhaps we can reach 50$. If so, gasoline would have to ba about 1$ a gallon to compete.

Let’s say 50% of the cars over the next 10 years go electric. What does that do to the price of Gasoline? I think you know the answer - it will, it MUST drop.

So even if you DONT buy an electric car, you can benefit.

No, the Gov SHOULD NOT mandate or incentivize electric cars. Because that only helps the dinosaurs stay alive a bit longer. Newer manufacturers who don’t have to service 100s of billions of debt can and will sell you an electric car for a reasonable price.

The next Tesla I predict will be ~ 25,000$. That means in reality, it will be far, far less expensive than a low-end toyota 4 banger econo-box. Why? Because fuel and maintenance is less...and if you ever have to get on the onramp in the low end econo-box, you are taking your lives in your hand, and they have poor crash worthiness. Teslas have 5 start crash ratings.

“Let’s say 50% of the cars over the next 10 years go electric.”

Say what you want. And the earth is heating up, and all sorts of nonsense.

Where is the DEMAND for electric cars? Hmmm?

BYD is known by every corrupt politician here in the USA.
BYD bribes to get their electric buses purchased after they bought the mayors and governors.

I don’t believe in global warming or the earth is heating up.

There is a DEMAND for a faster, better, cheaper car. Or do you want to pay 100k for a car/truck?

The Kia brand has evolved beautifully and is nothing like it was when it started.

____________________________

Yeah. It’s worse now.

Kia recalled over a half million Theta 2 engines due to failure.

Now over 3.4 million Kias are recalled due to fire risk over the anti-lock brakes. Kia is warning owners to park outside.

Sorry. Kia and Hyundai are OFF the list.

Hmmm...I'll have to look into those charges before I buy into it. I do know that the Telluride has been the #1 selling SUV in its class since it came out in 2020 and even right now J.D. Power has the 2023 Telluride listed as #1 in Quality/Reliability, Driving Experience, and Resale. https://www.jdpower.com/cars/2023/kia/telluride

After a quick search I did not find any of the recall claims that you mentioned. You got a link?

Ok Mr R2. Just checking up on your stuff. Dude...the most recent Kia in that recall list is almost NINE years old! Please note the year of mfg on the data (below) that you just referenced. Now look at your calendar. Now please remember that this is a discussion about CURRENT vehicles that you will find at a Kia dealership lot. Not what you will find in Autotrader.
