Computer Questions

ONE

I have a domain with an email address. Let's call it Joe@Smith.com. This email forwards to, say, Joe@gmail.com.

Is there a way to set up the email so anything sent to it (e.g., Ann@Smith.com, dhoie@Smith.com, etc.) is similarly forwarded?

Back in the early 2000s, I had a web host that did that for me. My email acted like *@Smith.com so that I could use any name or misspelling and it would forward.

But I don't think GoDaddy allows that. They want me to create a separate email for each name (and charge for it). But their site is so complicated, it's hard to know the answer.

Do you know if the GoDaddy offers that feature? And if not, are there other domain registrars who offer that feature?

================

TWO

My Windows 7 usually (not always) defaults to the Details View when listing files in a window. I often change the View to List or Large Icons, but it never stays that way.

How can I change the Default View in Windows 7?

Yes, it should work at GoDaddy as that is pretty common functionality. You can simple go to settings for each and set the forward. Or, if this is permanent, close them down and recreate them as alias to the one you keep.

The correct term is “catch-all” address. If GoDaddy doesn't offer that, then you need to look for a new mail host.

Yeah you have to do it at the host provider

Spammers will jump on them / bits

Better make them easy throwaway versions

I believe a “catch-all” address will only receive emails sent to a given domain that are not valid (misspelled). Valid email addresses will flow to the intended recipient.

Most people will never notice the difference, of course, as any locambulatory feedback is re-routed through the primary polycyclic encaptolography shaft, effectively eliminating nearly all percieved relative phase eddies of the directories.

You can use an email client like Thunderbird or others that will get the mail from all of your accounts.

Good points. There’s a candidate who will be on the stage tonight that could clear all of this up - apparently he’s an expert on the primary polycyclic encaptolography shaft.

I host my domains at Namecheap.com and they support catch-all email forwarding. When a site S asks for an email address, I give them S@mydomain.com. That way I know who spams and who sells my email to spammers. That’s how I found out for example, that the people who were collecting donations to the Canadian truckers were sleazy fraudsters.

I have Thunderbird. But lets say someone misspells my name, so I don't have that account. Thunderbird won't accept catch-all emails.

I apparently have to do something at GoDaddy. And their site is very confusing to navigate. I couldn't even find my email account (though it's still working), only the domain account for the email.

I did find lots of vapid "how to" videos that were 90% happy talk and 10% actual substance.

Sorry, I don’t understand the thing about someone misspelling your name. If it makes it to your server, TBird should collect it.

If they misspell your email addy it won’t make it to your server anyway.

I’m probably misunderstanding what you mean.

1) Ask godaddy
2) Win 7 is past it’s End of Life and you probably shouldn’t be surfing with it

In addition to my current Windows 7 laptop, I have three old laptops which are still functioning. A Windows 7, an XP, and an old DOS laptop I bought in 1990. Still works!

The older Windows 7 is my travel laptop, since it's less valuable if stolen or lost.

The XP is useful, because it's the only one that can access my old emails when I used Compuserve's email program. Although I haven't opened my XP in a few years.

The DOS laptop brings back memories of my youth.

I plan to buy a new laptop within a year. I'm planning a dual boot, with Windows 10 and Linux Mint Cinnamon.

I’ve been using WebHostingPad for my domain and email hosting.
I have an email, default@”Do_Tar”.com, as a catch-all. All email sent to any nonexistent address, such as “wrong@Do_tar.com” goes to the default@Do_Tar.com address.
This “default” is then treated as any standard email account.

I tun win 7 on the other side of this dual boot with Kubuntu being my everyday OS. I don’t get on the web with the win 7 side. There’s just a couple of programs I use now and again that I’m just used to.
