Thank you Sir, I did not know that. I’ve been there once in Mobile, AL and drove both east and west, and ended up in Biloxi, MS. I saw the “Sun shines on Biloxi
Air is filled with vapors from the sea”. After a late afternoon thunderstorm and there were “vapors” from the sea. An experience I will not forget. Thank you again, I will try to find that man’s music. Regards, kawhill
Down around Biloxi
Pretty girls are dancin’ in the sea
They all look like sisters in the ocean
The boy will fill his pail with salty water
And the storms will blow from off towards New Orleans
Sun shines on Biloxi
Air is filled with vapors from the sea
Boy will dig a pool beside the ocean
He sees creatures from his dream underwater
And the sun will set from off towards New Orleans
I like “American Pie” but I greatly prefer his “Vincent”.
Beautiful song. Better song than American Pie.
Have y’all heard the early, slightly different version of “American Pie” that Don McLean sang on WMUC (Univ. of Maryland radio station) about 6 months before the record was released?
It’s very cool...

**I once had it as an earworm when I was trying to sleep.**
Try silently quoting Bible verses/passages in your mind with your eyes closed. That knocks me out in minutes.
Ping to #44
It’s a good thing God sorts those kind of things out, and that He has mercy that endures forever.
**I wonder how many lives he ruined by smuggling drugs?**
IDK, but he certainly glorified getting drunk. Likely helped cause a few car wrecks; some fatal. Probably a few wrecked marriages as well.
“ Now, consider American Pie. I couldn’t tell you one other song by Don McLean, but WOW is AP epic, legendary, and timeless. And great. A+.”
So have we figured out who “the jester” represented?
“Come Monday” would have to be the song of his I like the most.
As do I. He also sang By the Waters of Babylon which is from Psalm 137. It’s sung as a round with just a banjo and himself for accompaniment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bnhhbV34nI
Live version from Dublin concert with audience singing in rounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bnhhbV34nI
He was right, they did sing prettier than they thought they could. :)
“Really? Such a song is hardly a celebration of conservative values.”
Hey, consenting Parrotheads...
Other than American Pie and Vincent (and By the Waters of Babylon which wasn’t a hit, I just like it), I couldn’t remember his other big songs, so I looked him up and was quite surprised at the ones other people sang (even Fred Astaire!)
He apparently loved Israel which may be why he put Psalm 137 to music.
The drunk Conga Line, beach balls being batted around, the inflatable Godzilla.
You probably described at least a thousand country songs right there.
That’s the main reason I couldn’t stand Margaritaville, aside from the depressing words “wasting away” and the umpteen times it was on the radio when I was driving to and from work.
Now great whales travel the rhumb lines
Dodging those deadly harpoons
Spawning their young, as their ancestors done
In the depths of her hidden lagoons
There are times I find myself with them
And times I feel as they do
We′re on a similar course, it’s just a different source
But I′m in danger of extinction too
“Treat Her Like A Lady,” Volcano, MCA, 1970
That song is truly great.
According to several sites, including this one that puts forth what one might surmise from the lyrics ( http://www.songfacts.com/facts/don-mclean/american-pie ), the jester might be Bob Dylan.
According to http://americansongwriter.com/bob-dylan-jester-american-pie-don-mclean/ , McLean didn’t like Dylan’s music or that he took the “thorny crown” from the king, Elvis Presley, when Dylan’s style replaced Presley’s.
Yep, music can really be a negative influence on life, and even deadly. When Jimmy’s song was out, everywhere I looked, while out looking for that perfect girl, there was girls with magaritas in their hands.
Before meeting my wife, I dated at least 3 girls whose future worried me. Later, seeing them drunk was a sad thing, but I was grateful to have moved on. One lost her license for a couple years. May have saved her life.
