Jimmy Buffett is dead at 76: 'Margaritaville' singer smuggled dope before building a business empire around his beach-bum lifestyle

Legendary singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, who epitomized beach-bum escapism with his hit 'Margaritaville' and turned the song that celebrated loafing into a billion-dollar business empire, has died. He was 76.

'Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,' a statement posted to Buffett's official website and social media pages said. 'He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.'

Buffett died after being diagnosed with skin cancer four years ago, a source told TMZ. He entered a hospice on Monday and had been visited by Paul McCartney at his home a week ago, with the former Beatle singing to Buffett and his family.

From humble beginnings as an admitted small-time marijuana smuggler in Key West, Buffett built a sprawling business empire based on his Caribbean-flavored soft rock that celebrated the Florida Keys, sunshine and nightlife.

His name became synonymous with a laid-back subtropical party vibe, and his legions of loyal fans, known as ParrotHeads, flocked to his restaurants, resorts and concerts. At his death, Buffet had a net worth of $1 billion, according to Forbes.

Good singer, though I can’t stand Margaritaville. I once had it as an earworm when I was trying to sleep. I never slept the whole night as Margaritaville went through my head.

Beach bum’s empire employed 5000 people and made him worth almost a billion $$$. But unlike so many entertainers who got rich, he never behaved like an ass___e.

I am hardly a fan. So what follows isn’t an insult…it’s really more out of ignorance.

But he had one Really Big Song. And to my tender ears, it was..well…catchy. And smooth. But it’s not deep or significant. But who cares what I think - I’d give it a solid B.

Now, consider American Pie. I couldn’t tell you one other song by Don McLean, but WOW is AP epic, legendary, and timeless. And great. A+.

Something tells me when Don McLean goes, there won’t be as much hoopla as there is around Mr Buffett. And that would be a shame.

Unlike Bill Clinton, I actually feel your pain. My song isn’t Margaritaville, and it isn’t even by JB. There’s a very popular song from the 80’s that is my nemesis. It’s still popular now. Drives me insane.

Buffett did a lot of things outside of music, he was as much a business man as a musician.

And a lot of his deep cuts are actually pretty good songs.

Much of his catalogue is just silliness. He wrote thirty or forty great songs, though. "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger in Paradise" are not among them. "He Went to Paris" and "A Pirate Looks at Forty" and "Come Monday" are among them.

I said as much, to the guys in my garage band, back in 1971.

I got a collective “meh” outta them.
