15-minute cities: What are they and how do they work?
DW ^ | 7/19/23 | Tim Schauenberg

As recently as a two decades ago, more people lived in the countryside than in urban areas. But that has since changed. Around 56% of the global population are now at home in cities, and the number continues to rise. According to the United Nations, two thirds of the roughly 10 billion people that will inhabit planet Earth by the year 2050 will live in built-up areas.

This consistent city spread has revealed serious cracks in their planning, shedding light on issues such as social injustice and exclusion, inadequate public transportation networks and smog-related health issues. One idea that has be

--- "15-minute cities: What are they and how do they work?

The article is from Deutsche Welle. Of DW one reads, "DW is funded through the German federal tax budget. Regulated by the Deutsche Welle Act, DW fulfills its program mission free from government influence."

Source: https://corporate.dw.com/en/about-dw/s-30688

If one thinks the last bit is true -- " free from government influence" -- one is naive. Or a Democrat or SPD or Green voter.

But the article's last line suggests "wiggle words," as we see in much major new and opinion in the West. ", Büttner says. So deciding which measures are best, depends on the context."

So in answer to the question, "what are 15-minute cities," I offer this. "15-minute cities" are a great big SQUIRREL.

Look over there! Squirrel!

Why? Germany's entrenched parties and DW alike are busy trying to stem a wave of pushback from citizens. Examples:

"German AfD: Revival of far-right a 'threat to Jewish life'," predicts DW. Not reports. Predicts.
Source: https://www.dw.com/en/german-afd-revival-of-far-right-a-threat-to-jewish-life/a-66447819
Why? AfD grows in political support, and of course a "democracy" can't have that.

Additional issues for Germany:

"Germany's slipped into recession and everyone should be worried"
Source: https://www.politico.eu/article/germany-olaf-scholz-europe-eurozone-slipped-into-recession-and-everyone-should-be-worried/

"Recession in Germany: What does that mean?"
Source: https://www.dw.com/en/recession-in-germany-what-does-that-mean/a-63444401

"High German energy prices are seeing some companies relocate: BDI"
Source: https://www.cnbc.com/2023/06/21/high-german-energy-prices-are-seeing-some-companies-relocate-bdi.html

"Rocketing energy costs are savaging German industry."
Source: https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/07/energy/german-industry-energy-prices/index.html "Germany falls into recession as inflation hits economy"
Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-65707206

So the 15-miniute cities stuff is VERY important. Very important. Squirrel! 15-minute squirrel! Look over there! Not at your wallet. At the Squirrel!

This applies to many nations in Europe, and we're getting a lot of our very own SQUIRRELS here, these days.

The billionaires like Gates just want to put all of us Plebes in those 15 minute villages so they can freely roam without running into smelly Walmart shoppers.

“The big difference is that we’ll be TOLD if and when we can leave...”

There are 15 minute cities in England right now that will photo cam your license plate as your vehicle leaves your designated area and send you a ticket. I was told that several people took the plates off their cars and walked it passed the cameras. When they got the tickets they pointed out their photos and showed they had not driven out of their designated area.

Funny, but their vehicles are still restricted from free passage.

“Carlos Moreno, urbanist and professor at the Sorbonne University in Paris first came up with the idea in 2016. He wanted everyone to have easy access to shops, schools, doctors, the gym, parks, restaurants and cultural institutions.”

As George Wallace wisely observed intellectuals are pointy headed college professors who can’t even park a bicycle straight... But they feel qualified to design and run our lives.

The really sad and pathetic thing is, WE LET THEM!

And, thus, the song 16 TONS WHAT DO YOU GET. ANOTHER DAY
OLDER AND DEEPER IN DEBT, which was sung, I believe, by
Tennessee Ernie Ford.

Yes much of the first years of my youth were lived in a rural
area just south of the Dallas/Oak Cliff area. Longed for the big city of Dallas, just riding their street cars was
enjoyment. However after actually growing to maturity in
the city proper, freedom was felt when at last I was able
to leave the city to live in a small community just north
of Dallas. Land, open land, cattle grazing next door.
The killer was the commute from home to the city. During rush hour it took at least an hour or more morning and evening
Yet, we were committed and did the necessary until one day
I left work and we were no longer a two income household.
Buying and moving into rural was during the time of Jimmy
Carter's reign. Life had its challenges then. And then
REAGEN. How blessed were we? His departure brought only
more sorrow and grief than we had with the Carter nightmare.
Though not for all, rural living can be a different lifestyle, especially if you've no need to venture into the
more urban system repeatedly.

I live in a neighborhood in the City of Cleveland.

Not a suburb, the city.

I am less than 10 minute walk or bike ride from my kids school, several grocery stores, several retail outlets,
several gyms including 24 hour ones, dozens of bars & nightclubs, public parks including access to one of the 18 reservations of the best urban park system in the country, the Cleveland Metroparks & a plethora of different styles of restaurants.

I didn’t know I had it so good!

The hospital district of Cleveland I believe employs more people than the downtown. There are nice houses in Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights, which I believe have sizable black populations.

In many large metropolitan areas people have specialized skills.

For a specialist, one possible employer might be in Alexandria, VA, another in Gaithersburg, MD, another in Tysons Corner, VA, and the fourth in Reston, VA.

Unless the specialist chooses to live in a rental apartment, if one employer lacks work the next commute will be well over 15 minutes.

One is not going to get from Reston to Gaithersburg in 15 minutes legally.

Midtown Manhattan allows corporations to build teams from people living in Princeton, Summit, Flemington, Poughkeepsie, Upper Saddle River, New Haven, Waterbury, etc.

The 15-minute idea is simply a scheme to justify trashing suburbs.

If Mr. Executive can commute from Lake Forest to the Loop, Miss Teacher can commute from Chicago to Lake Forest.

Balancing inbound and outbound ridership keeps transit fares down.

At one time Midtown Manhattan was largely residential.

In 1929, the taxes on the Vanderbilt mansion where Bergdorf-Goodman is became too much for the Vanderbilts.

I feel the same looking at that pic!
Wife had never been to NYC so I took her in June.
I can’t stand it there…too crowded and no vehicle with which to escape. Always happy to get the hell out of there and back to Mississippi!!

The idea behind the concept is to build cities in such a way that most daily necessities and services are located within a 15-minute walk or bike ride.

There's a pretty big difference between a 15 minute walk and a 15 minute bike ride.
