WASHINGTON (TND) — The Washington Commanders embraced Bud Light as the football team's official beer partner in a social media post Thursday.
The 20-second video shows clips of fans cheering while cheerleaders and players dance to “Bring It On” by SATV Music. It then displays the team’s logo alongside Bud Light’s with the line, “the official beer partner of the Washington Commanders.”
Commenters on the post questioned the partnership in light of recent controversy surrounding the beer brand.
This has got to be the worst marketing move ever! Here, I thought this new ownership was going to do things differently. Nope, right back to the same backward thinking!” one commenter said. “Seriously? Time to burn my gear!” another said.
In a press release on the new partnership, the Commanders explained that the Bud Light brand will be featured in several areas of the team’s fan promotions and community outreach during the 2023 season.
“As part of the deal, Anheuser-Busch will become the Official Beer Sponsor of the Washington Commanders, making it easy for fans ages 21 and over to enjoy the game experience all season long with gameday activations, custom social and digital content, exclusive fan content, and much more,” the press release reads. “Additionally, the Washington Commanders, Anheuser-Busch, and Bud Light are honoring the veteran and first-responder community with exclusive experiences and fan recognition.”
The partnership comes as the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) this month vowed to launch a boycott “similar to Anheuser Busch” against the Commanders if they continue to ignore a petition to revert the team’s name back to the "Redskins," a moniker it bore prior to its removal and replacement in 2020.
NAGA’s petition currently has nearly 115,000 signatures, an amount nearly double the seating capacity of the Commanders’ home stadium, FedEx Field.
NAGA has promised similar action toward the Cleveland Guardians, the baseball team which previously went by the "Indians."
Shortly after the Commanders' Bud Light announcement Thursday, NAGA released a statement decrying the team's new partnership, accusing the franchise of giving "the middle finger to all Americans."
"The Woke, Cancel-Culture loving Commanders have no intention of respecting America and instead are pushing their own DEI [Diversity, Equity and Inclusion] agenda against their own consumers' outrage shown in the #ReclaimTheRedskins petition," NAGA said Thursday.
Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of Bud Light, lost nearly $400 million in U.S. sales in 2023 following its partnership with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney. Bud Light consumers, who saw the partnership as a misrepresentation of the beer’s target demographic, boycotted the brew, leading to Modelo unseating it as the nation’s top selling beer.
Anheuser-Busch recently sold eight beverage brands to cannabis producer Tilray Brands. The transaction made Tilray the fifth-largest craft beer producer in the country.
