More cheap weed may lead to higher rates of mental health problems
New York City has ranked as the world’s cannabis capital, where denizens blaze through 62.3 tonnes of pot each year, significantly more than runners-up Sydney and Los Angeles.
The scorecard from CFAH, a wellness group, placed five other US cities in the top 20 — Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, and Denver — each consuming at least 6.8 tonnes of weed each year.
Europe and North America dominate the table. The only other country that comes close to the US is Canada, with four cities — Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Annapolis — in the rankings.
CFAH's report, the 2023 Cannabis Global Price Index, stokes fears that the legalization of cannabis across 23 US states and Washington DC is driving consumption, especially among teens and young adults.
Advocates say pot has health and social benefits, but critics say widespread use leads to higher rates of mental health problems, substance abuse and even more stoned drivers causing car crashes.
Kevin Sabet, a former White House drugs tsar who now heads the Smart Approaches to Marijuana campaign, says New York and other cities that legalize cannabis are creating problems down the road.
'When drugs are legal, their price plummets, availability soars, and the commercialization and industrialization machines take hold,' Sabet posted on social media this week.
'It's a recipe for incredible damage.'
For their league table, researchers also looked at the price of cannabis globally.
Residents of Tokyo pay the most for pot, at nearly $34 per gram. Users in Dublin, in Ireland, Tallinn, in Estonia, and the Israeli city of Rishon LeTsiyon also pay over the odds for a smoke.

Sounds like you could use a gummy.
What’s happening in the big cities is just another reason not to smoke dope.
Dividing that Total by the population would show the ‘Heavy Hitters.’

Must I do Everything?
The cannabis industry’s 2023 report is going to generate a tremendous buzz.
Yes. It's as though large numbers of people in positions of responsibility are high on cannabis. Maybe they are.
Marijuana, Cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamines, et al. are to the contemporary USA as opium was to China in the 19th century.
They are destroying America, the American People, the entire USA. This is by design. America's enemies, both domestic and foreign, are intentionally pushing drug addiction on the American People just as Europeans pushed opium addiction on the Chinese People.
This is possible only because Western Civilization is in an advanced state of decay: decadence.
It was possible for Europeans to force opium on the Chinese People only because China was in an advanced state of decay: decadence.
Had to be in NYC tonight. The place stinks of weed, on every block and on every corner.
Good observations. I’ve often thought many of the 81 million voters for Biden were stoners
Explains a lot.
a drugged society can not be a good society...
We are becoming a nation of “Lotus Eaters”. This will not end well.
>Houston is.<
It’s also illegal in Texas. Which makes me wonder where these “researchers/scientists” came up with their data. Did they just sample the people living under a bridge?

“Per Capita is the proper measurement.”
I’m not quite sure how one city is figured for a percentage when one is so much bigger than another basing the measurement when that deflects the amount of users as less. Half of the city of New York, 18.8 million, is bigger than the whole population of Chicago, or Huston, or Miami, or Philadelphia. So it doesn’t reflect the amount of users in a city, it actually lessens the information. So using New York or L.A. as a point of information doesn’t tell the whole truth whether there is a drug problem. If they are going after New York then the article is redundant. If it’s that much bigger, then it will have a bigger use. But maybe less than the percentage of other cities.

62.3 tons works out to about 1/4 ounce per person per year. (~7,000,000 population in NYC).
Can't believe the TU is really having a kitten, BTW.
But the public hearings on pot licensing are gonna be interesting when the public is not allowed to know who is involved with these LLCs...
