Criminals stream movies, play video games and make playlists on ‘prison iPads’

Prisoners are streaming Hollywood hits, curating Spotify-style playlists and getting access to popular video games thanks to an explosion in iPad-style tablets inside institutions across the country.

One company alone is providing devices to 600,000 inmates, nearly one-third of estimated 1.9 million people in US jails and prisons.

The ubiquitous tablets, which are still growing in popularity, were highlighted by a series of topless pictures of South Carolina murderer Alex Murdaugh, who used the device to make video calls directly from his cell.

California – the nation’s second-biggest state correctional department – became the latest this month to complete a program expanding their use to 32 state prisons, including San Quentin and Folsom, where Johnny Cash made history in 1968.

Could they restrict prison Wi-Fi from being able to upload?

That’s the state you want to commit crime in, most definitely.

The Norse system of prisons is the best:

Ask yourself, do you want these guys coming out of prison better people, or do you want them treated like crap in the prison so they become even more bitter and evil?

The ideal system is isolated areas, don’t have them interact with each other, and put them into cells with calm settings like japanese gardens, give them access to positive books, movies, and music that would mentally make them more relaxed and less violent over time.

Prison, the way we use it, should be abolished.

Sometimes I think government would like to see most everyone in prison...They’re even trying to imprison former presidents and anyone else who don’t go along with their Marxists narratives.

In the article, it said they don’t have access to WiFi.

I’m not opposed to this, but the tablets should have educational content only and no wi-fi.

Then how do they “stream” anything as the article suggests?

I know someone in prison, who has a tablet like this. He had to buy it, and he has to pay for most anything he does have access to, such as music playlists. The Dept of Corrections and the local prison also use the tablets for many communications to the inmates, which used to be printed and disbursed on paper or tacked to bulletin boards in the housing units. I think they are mostly provided free by the state now, since they are utilized a good deal by the prisons.

They DO NOT have access to the internet, and (at least in IL), the tablets are not used for any phone calls or video chats, etc. Since all of their calls are subject to being monitored or recorded, it seems unlikely that the tablets would be used for calls under current conditions. Just my 2 cents.

I’m going to be placed in the female population, or perhaps by that time it will just be mixed general population.

I am not 100% sure, but I think they have a library of movies from which they can choose. I suspect they can download (for a fee), choices from the list. I don’t know if this equates to “streaming”, but it seems the result is that they can watch a movie.

It didn’t “just happen” they’ve been rolling out various way to keep prisoners “entertained” for decades. And remember these most prisons are run by corporations these days, so the public has no say. They get paid by head count, and nobody in the government cares so long as there’s no lawsuits.

The very much liberal-despised Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio believed that anyone serving time in prison should have nothing that a free man or womans should have.
