A school district in Massachusetts has been slowly phasing algebra 1 out of its middle-school curriculum because the advanced math classes were predominantly taken by white and Asian students. Now, some area parents are considering placing their child in a private school or a homeschooling program to ensure that they are adequately prepared for high school mathematics.
Since 2017, Cambridge Public Schools has been slowly moving away from placing middle school students into "grade-level" or "accelerated" math classes since the "grade-level" courses were filled with black and Hispanic students, while the "accelerated" courses had mostly white and Asian students. District officials claim that the changes are designed to create better equity.

Math is racist. /s
I dunno.
Way back, I had Algebra 1 in 8th grade in an Arizona junior high school that was supposed to be “substandard”.
Now “middle schools” in general are going substandard! Phooey!!
Discrimination of low expectations.
Maybe they should eliminate the basketball team because there are no Asians.
That mean old IQ Bell Curve strikes again.
This philosophy would demand that the lowest common denominator, respective to performance, be the only allowed standard and would also require that it is awarded an ‘A’ grade.
If everyone can’t do advanced math then NOBODY gets to learn advanced math.
Apply it to anything. If everyone can’t get an ‘A’ then NOBODY gets an ‘A’. If Johnny can’t play basketball then NOBODY gets to play basketball.
In a word, communism, a race to the bottom. These people are idiots. Get your kids out of these schools.
Just make Alegbra an elective course. Those interested will enroll, those not won’t.
“Grade-level” is a new synonym for “Amish”.
I guess only the supremiest kids can do math
More like bringing everyone down to the same ignorant level.
“...the changes are designed to create better equity. ...”
Equitable stupidity that is..
Advanced math track in This Guy’s local public school district (only 5 percent max of district students will be given the chance to follow this track):
7th: Algebra I
8th: Geometry
9th: Algebra II
10th:Math Concepts/Pre-Calc/Trigonometry
11th:Calc AB (AP)
12th:Calc CD
Without taking the trouble of separating the wheat from the chaff during 5th/6th grade, and offering Algebra I in 7th grade to the “wheat” students, this district would cease supplying the best prepared students it can to compete for for STEAM-major college major seats around the U.S.
There is no substitute for putting these students through their mathematics paces before graduation from high school.
An ignorant, impaired, lazy citizenry is far easier to control.
?
We HS’d our two kids...K thru 12....They are both prosperous...and doing well.
He went to school for electrical and computer engineering. He already had taken all of the programming courses that he needed for that degree while he was in high school because had done dual enrollment at a local college. He was able to graduate in 3 years. He is about to turn 34. He has his own software company. He’s married with two children now and he’s trying to get a web-based software company for writers off the ground. I think his hope is to get a company that’s running itself so he can homeschool his kids with his wife. His children are pretty young right now. A 2 year old and a newborn.
I have three other children. Only one other one plans to homeschool.
I cannot speak highly enough about homeschooling. I wish more people would do it. All four of my children did very well by it.
Don’t you worry though..all those illiterates will somehow make it to law school provide g once again that a college degree is basically an award not so much an achievement.
Add dependent.
And we are well on our way to "Idiocracy".
At one point in the film the teacher says to them "math is the great leveler. In this country there are some who will think that you know less than you do because of your name...and your complexion".
And they all passed.
Of course messages of that sort haven't reached the gates of Harvard yet...or those wealthy, progressive neighborhoods nearby.
Mistake. Huge mistake. If your child or grandchild is white, and doesn’t have at the very least Calc I, hang up any chance of getting into a good college.
