San Francisco Mayor London Breed floated the idea of demolishing the abandoned Westfield mall as a solution to the city's untamed drug and crime epidemic.
Speaking at Bloomberg's Technology Summit in California, Breed brushed off questions about the mall's demise and argued 'there are a lot of people who may not even shop in those places' due to the rise of online shopping.
The city has seen a mass exodus of companies as a result of rampant crime in the city, with Westfield the latest to flee after it announced it has been forced to stop making mortgage payments due to the loss of business.
But Breed took on an optimistic tone as she said the struggling city's abandoned streets could be a silver lining for other businesses.
'You can convert spaces,' she said. 'A Westfield mall could become, you know, something completely different than what it currently is... we could even tear down the whole building and build a whole new soccer stadium.'
San Francisco's Westfield mall stands as the prime example of the city's dramatic fall from grace, where the once-bustling hub is now a drug-infested wasteland.
In 2016, the property was appraised at $1.2 billion, but a stark decline saw the mall hit with years of looting, soft policing and open-air drug taking.
The mall's anchor tenant, Nordstrom, announced it is leaving the location in August. At the time, Westfield blamed 'unsafe conditions' and a 'lack of enforcement against rampant criminal activity' for the departure.
Once Nordstrom leaves the mall, it will be just 55 percent leased.
With the mall now a shell of its former self, Breed was asked how she planned to reverse course and save the dying property.

I have never been to San Francisco, and won’t unless business takes me there.
Looking at it on the map, who wants to direct thousands of cars to a sports arena on a peninsula? One well-placed accident, and the pile-up could last for DAYS.
Similar tactics used in my very liberal city. Make it impossible to run a business, massively tax property owners to make up for business tax short falls, then take over the property to build a large public works project.
VA-JOY-NA!
The downtown stadium for the San Diego Padres is working quite well.
But a crime ridden shithole city San Diego is not.
The mall in San Francisco is closed because people stopped going there. Because...well...
As Chris Rock said, "There are two kinds of malls...."
I went to a Rams game in St. Louis 20 years ago. Crime really wasn’t a problem on a Sunday morning, but it turned out to be an undesirable location for many fans. Oh yes, on paper they almost sold out, maybe because corporations bought the PSLs, but the location wasn’t great. On the other hand, the Cards do okay and they are nearby.
Sports stadiums can double as detention centers for the upcoming conservative purge.
Liberals never acknowledge failure or consequences. Never.
What’s worse than stepping in dog poop? You get 3 guesses.
Sounds like a reason for not to be a sanctuary city. But, you people in SF put her in office, so I guess that’s what you want. I was there 30 years ago and loved the city. Went back two years ago and saw people camped out a block from the wharf, feces on the streets, people passed out in doorways, and used needles in the street gutters. I’ll never go back and would encourage everyone to do the same.
we could even tear down the whole building and build a whole new soccer stadium
Sounds like one of the last lines in Beetlejuice:
“Hey, this is a good look for me!”, right after the witch doctor shrinks his head to the size of a golf ball.
Then explain Ford Field and Comerica Park, and the Wings and Pistons move to Little Caesar Arena.
What sport?
Gladiator Events ?
Ya....shop “online” so ya don’t get murdered by Satan’s thugs running loose!!
“But Breed took on an optimistic tone as she said the struggling city’s abandoned streets could be a silver lining for other businesses.”
It would be a silver lining in her and her filthy democrat friends pockets.
I partially agree with her. Tear down the mall. But in its place erect a large headstone type memorial to the mall saying it was slain by the behavior of the people that looted it blind.
Stupid liberal mayors love the "put stadiums in bad neighborhoods" crap.
It feeds their delusion 'the homeless' are homeless because they don't have jobs. And that criminals only commit crimes because they don't have transportation to neighborhoods with high paying jobs. Some democxrat mayors even include that a certain percentage of construction workers must come from 'the neighborhood'.. Build the stadium AND construction jobs for criminals AND the homeless. Of course it doesn't work that way because the premise is wrong. The homeless want drugs and sex and the criminals want lots of money for doing limited work.
The next stage of failure: People in the city might go to the games but the city can't book other events because people are afraid of being robbed walking to their cars...So the stadium fails.
San Francisco's a hellhole because it's run by democrats.
And the possible sports stadium will be built with tax payer’s money, not the chosen team’s owner(s).
That’s because they lack reason and critical thinking skills. They only act on their emotions and whatever their cult leaders tell them to.

Not entirely. Liberals are very focused, calculating and determined to get what they want. Unlike those on “our side” the Left is highly motivated and fearless.
They are certainly winning the culture war and have managed to gain control over every institution in our society.
Their successes speak for themselves. They play to win, and we don’t.
