The State is a third party to the contract. Ignore that at your peril.

The State is the first party to a pair of marriage contracts. One between husband and state, and the other between wife and state. What we think of the "marriage" is merely a dotted-line between husband and wife. This is why for the most part we are "married" from the moment of paying for the "marriage license". This gives the state the powers of taxation marriage statutes, and power on divorces.

Before "marriage licenses", marriages were documented in a family bible and then recorded in the local county registry, and that was it.

Alabama and perhaps a few other places are on to this scam:

2. Whatโ€™s the difference between a marriage license and a marriage certificate? A marriage license is a legal document issued by a government office in charge of marriages in the county or state in which a ceremony is held. Marriage certificates can be either legal documents (official) or non-legal keepsakes (commemorative).

An official marriage certificate, or certified certificate of marriage, is a form filed with a government office to record a legal marriage. A commemorative certificate is not a legal document -- these are decorative mementos celebrating the union, and are often framed and displayed by the couple.

I think the marriage/divorce percentages should be broken down by “repeat” offenders. That is, how many second and third marriages end in divorce? I argue that many one timers, who enter the marriage believing it’s a one time thing, are a pretty high proportion of the entire group.

It seems like today the couple puts much more effort and thought into planning the wedding than into planning the marriage.

Men can dangle in the Nether of being legally married but not connected.

Most women cannot. They take the bull by the horns and initiate divorce to stop the pain for them of uncertainty

Said nobody ever.

I did. And 23 years (and six kids) later, we're still going strong.

If you can't make the commitment, then marriage isn't for you.

Revise the rules for 2023 in America.

#1 - you must do everything your wife says, no matter what

#2 - she might not be happy anyway and decides to divorce you

Exceptions? You may be happily married to a wife in a insular religious community. They do exist but they're not common.

Good for you. Mr. GG2 and I are like that. Right now he’s scarfing down a stack of blueberry pancakes and scrambled eggs I whipped up for him and watching pig hunting porn on his tablet. Later today were going over to Bass Pro and look at a gun were thinking of buying. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Said nobody ever

Except in the marriage vows.

Correct. Married 25 years. Did not exactly know what marriage was about until I reconnected with my Catholic faith and learned. One thing I knew about marriage was that it was permanent which required me to work it out. Learned what my vocation was, my role as a man and a husband in the context of marriage and grew into it. The Lord is the reason we are still happily married.

A time when the morality of a, yes, Christian, small-town world valued character over fame, fortune and unbridled, short-term sensual pleasure.

I’m so glad for you. I’m can tell you love Beau by the way you always talk about him. He sounds like a great guy.

You’re right about love not being hard. Mr. GG2 and I hardly ever have a cross word. We both had previous disaster marriages. I can’t imagine us not being together.

“However, what nobody tells you is that marriage is not always easy.”

Ridiculous statement. Who thinks marriage is “always easy”? I’ve never heard of anyone who said marriage is always easy nor anyone who ever assumed it was. Anyone who has parents has seen them fight, go through rough patches, maybe get divorced or at least HEARD of divorce, broken families, child support etc. What do they think THAT is about?

Daughter #2 and hubby just celebrated their first anniversary last month, and doing good!

Mrs. Telescope and me just celebrated our 42nd.
I agree with the article. It ainโ€™t easy sometimes, but we canโ€™t live without each other!

Love does NOT have to be โ€˜work.โ€™ Love does NOT have to be โ€˜hard.โ€™ You just need to be your true self, you need to GROW UP, be happy with the life YOU have built for yourself and then love will find you. :)

Children absolutely make it tougher, at least moneywise.
My kids donโ€™t want to have kids.
