NYC women wearing baggy ‘subway shirts’ over clothes to deter train creeps

Summer is just around the corner, which means New Yorkers are baring arms — and legs, shoulders and abs.

But many young women are also packing a defense for deterring creepy dudes: the subway shirt.

Alternatively known as a modesty shirt or outfit dampener, it’s a baggy, longer layer that can be thrown over more fitted or revealing clothes to avoid harassment underground.

“As we come out of winter, people act like they’ve never seen a woman before,” Grace Masingale told The Post.

The 22-year-old social media manager from the Upper East Side has had her fair share of harassment by men on the train, who have said everything from “I would like to see what’s underneath that” to “Your breasts are so perky.” Once, she was even followed out of the 23rd Street station on the 1 line.

So now she dons a light sweater over her clothes when she leaves the house, in the hopes of drawing less attention to herself, and takes it off at her destination

OK, but do you have a limit? For example, would you be ok with women wearing bikinis or lingerie on the subway? None of us would accept that as an excuse for men assaulting women, but the point is do you have a limit on what you say society should deem acceptable attire in public?

Check out the pics—they are dressed like, well, you’ll come up with your own descriptions for it, under the modesty tees they are now wearing on top when riding on the subway.

For those not in NYC, it is hard on popular trains not to get your body pressed against others, so without those modesty tees...

All these women look like fashion models. The article reads like an advert for some line of clothing.
The one in yellow has a face made up like a baby doll. Legs exposed, and yeah, the baggy shirt hides it all-NOT. Ridiculous article.

If you feel the need to cover up what you are wearing to avoid getting too much attention on the subway, what you are wearing is probably inappropriate for the work environment. Save the revealing outfits for parties or clubbing. Men have enough trouble with women in the workplace as it is.

The gist of my OP is that these NYC women continue to vote for the likes of AOC, Bill deBlasshole, Jabba Nadler and their ilk in thinking that these cheap politicians have something good to offer, when all they ever deliver is just more and more hack political woe and misery.

It's somewhat amusing, but sad, that nothing ever changes in their thinking and voting habits.

Great question. And I suppose folks would give a wide range of answers to that. I would say the outfit in post #9 is okay. All the naughty parts are covered (ha).

Don’t get me wrong. Wearing that outfit on the subway is stupid, and provocative. That lady should expect to get stares - which is probably her goal in the first place.

So stare. But rude and/or suggestive comments would be crossing the line. At that point the fault is with the commenter.

No, this is just for the subway ride. The article shows the subway outer shirt, and the very revealing clothing that these girls wear anyway, once they are to their destination. They aren’t dressing modestly underneath the subway shirt.
