Shocking photos and videos show an alligator chilling on an Alabama beach in the Gulf of Mexico just feet away from beachgoers.
In a post on Facebook, one man shared the grabs of the reptile in the large body of water, along with a short clip of the animal wading by the shore.
'The things you never think you'll see,' wrote Matt Harvill on Facebook. 'First time seeing a gator on Dauphin Island. Heading towards the west end be careful y'all.'
Harvill said the alligator seemed curious more than anything but the video has some beachgoers spooked. Others, however, say it won't affect their beach trips.
'I'd probably still get in the water,' said beachgoer Noah Knight. 'Not anywhere in the area where the alligator is at but still probably.'
The alligator hit the beach over the weekend, according to Harvill's post.
'It was just a very beautiful day - my girlfriend and I were just spending some time on the beach when someone mentioned it,' Harvill said.
'So, we walked down to get a better look and snap some pictures. It's not everyday something like that happens,' he continued.
'We see them in Dog River and the Bird sanctuary. Almost never in the Gulf like that. I knew if I didn't get pictures no one would ever believe it,' Harvill said.

That is a crocodile, but not because gators hate salt water. It’s a croc because it has a narrow snout as opposed to the broad alligator snout and because it has many exposed teeth when its mouth is closed. You hardly see any teeth when a gator’s mouth is closed.
Thanks I thought so
"Hmm, I wonder how they would taste? Maybe a little different than the two campers I downed yesterday?"
Regards,
Alligators can do saltwater. I was swimming in the Gulf when I was a kid, and this “log” kept getting closer and closer.
I got my brother out of the water and ran to the car. It was a gator, and he got out, walked across the road and went into the fresh water.
Such is growing up in Florida.

Troy Landry says they taste like the tires on his jeep might taste.
“Enormous” it sez. So how big was it (in pounds and feet)?
Yup, alligators do occasionally swim in the Gulf. There are alligators on Horn Island which is an island off the coast of Mississippi just two islands over from Dauphin Island. Going west from Dauphin Island the next island is Petit Bois Island, then Horn Island. For years one of the largest known alligators in Mississippi made his home on Horn Island. The national park service website mentions the alligators on Horn Island and reminds visitors they’re protected and to leave them alone.
Had I been there that thing would have been made into a handbag and shoes.
It is time to declare open season on gators and crocs. Honestly, I think they belong in the category of creatures created by God to see if humans are smart enough to wipe them out.
The head & teeth of the American crocodile doesn't look anything like the animal in the news story. And a croc's fourth lower tooth should be visible. None of the animal in the news story's lower teeth are visible. Plus the American crocodile is a grey color.
Looks like a ‘gator, to me.
Wretch.
Its probably a Croc.
In answer to how big - I’d guess 48 pairs of cowboy boots. Or - over 100 handbags depending on the choice of measurement.
The Louisiana bayous around New Orleans are made up of brackish water (a mixture of saltwater and freshwater).
LOL! I love Swamp People.
According to the video news report farther down in the article, Dolphin Island Coast Guard confirmed that it is an alligator.
I agree. Crocs and gators ARE absolutely wretched, despicable, and cannot be trusted. Kill them all!
Looks small 6-7 feet.
