Keep and Bear arms does not just imply ownership but further implies the right to carry them about where one goes and keep them in one's possession. If they had merely said "own arms" the 2nd Amendment would have been much weaker, the gun grabbers would say, hey you can own it, but you can't take it out of a gun safe, or you have to keep it in a secure licensed gun bank and maybe go look at it behind a wall of glass on Sundays...but you can't carry it about.
To: lowbridge
So we can “keep and bear” them but we cannot own them?
That makes total sense.

Maybe Olberman would like to turn in any guns he or his body guards own before he throws any more stones...

The first amendment doesn’t say anything about radio, television or the internet. So does that mean that it does not apply there? The 4th Amendment doesn’t say anything about privacy. 5th Amendment has no language for a free attorney.
However, if you do a language analysis, the consistency of “the people” throughout the Constitution and the Bill of Rights means, Individual people as private citizens. Otherwise, every other amendment suddenly changes to only mean the people in terms of the people as a whole in the form of a government.
And, the government has no need to guarantee the right of itself to keep armaments. There is already a clause in the constitution about keeping and maintaining a navy and an army. Governments have always kept arms. There is little to no redundancy in the Constitution, so why would it exist here?

If the Founders had said ‘own,’ dumb mofos like Olbermann would be arguing the 2nd only guarantees our right to own firearms, not keep and bear them. SHUT UP KEITH!
To: lowbridge
Keith, that is because the founders were smarter then you. And they understood that if you did not own a gun for what ever reason your neighbor may lend you one of his.
And you still had the right to keep and carry it.
The militia was free males between the ages of 14 and 45. But the wording shifts in the second part to "the right of the people". That is all free people. No matter age or sex. And no matter if they actually owned the weapon in question or not.
We just went through this issue with the Rittenhouse case where the concept of it being ok to lend someone a gun was talked about.
Do try to keep up.

What these clowns always fail to acknowledge is that the Bill of Rights is NOT a restriction on the People, but rather a restriction on the government.

In a sense he’s right. It isn’t the amendment itself that protects any right...it’s the willingness to act on that right against those who try to take it away that protects the right. When the various groups threaten violence and your government wants to disarm YOU...it’s time to wonder exactly why.

How about slaves
Do you ‘own’ or ‘keep’ a slave?
Now apply that to ‘keep’ a gun.
