The Writers Guild of America has voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike against film and television studios and streamers, which gives WGA negotiators licence to launch a work stoppage in the coming weeks.
More than 9,000 screenwriters - nearly 98% of those casting ballots - voted to authorize a strike if the WGA cannot reach a new agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and TV producers by May 1.
The guild said the balloting set a WGA record for both turnout (nearly 80% of those eligible voted) and support for a possible strike.

The AMPTP further said, "Our goal is, and continues to be, to reach a fair and reasonable agreement. An agreement is only possible if the guild is committed to turning its focus to serious bargaining by engaging in full discussions of the issues with the companies and searching for reasonable compromises."
If the union does end up going on strike, it's unclear how long it would be before a strike would affect what audiences are able to watch.
Many series have numerous scripts in hand, but if members of the Screen Actors Guild and the Directors Guild of America refused to cross WGA picket lines, many productions would slam to a halt.
The last time the WGA went on strike, in late 2007, it lasted 100 days. A study released soon after the work stoppage prepared by the Milken Institute estimated a net loss of 37,700 jobs directly and indirectly tied to the entertainment industry, resulting in $2.1 billion in losses

Writers are seeking a package of compensation increases valued at nearly $600 million. That includes increases in minimum pay and higher residual payments from streaming, along with increased contributions to the union’s health and pension plans.
Writers argue that despite the streaming boom, their median pay has fallen in the last decade, citing a WGA report.
Complicating matters is that major studios such as Walt Disney Co., Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix are facing their own economic pressures to slash costs in the face of rising debt levels, a reassessment of the streaming business and a possible recession.
That's a shame.
Will anyone notice? Hollywood has about five plot lines that they repeat over and over. Right now they are taking old movies and remaking them with GIBLET characters thus totally destroying the brand of the original movie.
Who cares if the writer’s go on strike? ChatGPT can write the screen scripts.
Does any group in Hollywood have less power than the writers? Janitors are higher up on the food chain.
Janitors actually do useful stuff.
Good, beers on me.
Is “GIBLET characters” are real term?
I’m getting Gay Intersex Black Lesbian Ethnic Transexual out of it, but if it has a real meaning, I’d like to know.
NINE THOUSAND screenwriters and all they produce is woke....(ah)....junk?
Already paid too much IMHO.
81,000,000 of the 9,000 writers voted to strike.
Please do. Last time it destroyed weekly sitcoms and reality TV replaced them. Our glorious actors now do TV commercials.
I expect it will mirror public unions where the union negotiates to protect senior members at the expense of new entrants, meaning more of the same stale wokism.
The last strike brought us “Reality shows” galore what ever can they come up with now? Re-runs galore, oh wait they are doing that now. They have run out of ways to insert f-bombs into conversations maybe they can come up with some other way to insult their audience that can lose the industry even more money. They at one time sought to entertain their audience now they seek to indoctrinate us and I see no chance of them changing.
IF there is such a strike Hollywood will just grab an old script, give it a “haircut” (new names for the main characters) and continue to produce the same old trash they have done for years.
Too much of the same style of shows. Do we need another remake that is not as good as the original? Another CSI or NCIS or Criminal Minds etc?
Actors who have their hair teased more then the actresses?
Too many 2-3 day beards on men.
“It was a dark and stormy night” brooding writing and acting.
Pluto tv recently ran several episodes of “Star Trek Picard”...
The writers should pay the studio for writing that drivel!
Terrible writing. The writers are trained in whining. Everyone is a victim style.
If they and the studios stop with WOKE / DEI the number of episodes would increase and they would be paid more for being entertaining.
