Netflix To Release Cleopatra Docuseries Depicting The Queen As Black

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it would be releasing a documentary on the life of Cleopatra with one significant change, her ethnicity.

I don’t mind a fiction which changes things around — like Lincoln as a vampire hunter :)

Good point -- though technically that wasn't a documentary, but it could be construed as such.

They even got the crown wrong. First, there’s only one cobra on an Egyptian crown, not two. But queens didn’t wear that one, except for a few that were basically standing in and acting as regents. Cleopatra and other queens wore the Vulture crown instead.

well, there are different “levels” - if something claims to be a documentary, then it should be true to history.

Portraying a known historical figure to be of a recognizable physical difference as a “documentary”? NO, that’s wrong.

Portraying a known historical figure to be of a recognizable physical difference as a “drama based on historical figures”? Like “the Crown” — or “William Wallace” — well, MAYBE (the Crown’s casting of middle-aged and older Prince Phillip went against my sensibilities) — as an amateur historian I say no — I dislike the fact that people think “Braveheart” shows any resemblance to historical reality.

Portraying a historical figure on an explicitly stated fiction? Sure, why not — like Idris Elba as Heimdall (he was great) or Tilda Swinton as the ancient one (again, I thought she was great in that role)

“blue eyed” — most likely no.

We have zero historical statements or depictions showing her eye color.

Her hair was referred to as auburn. So most likely she wasn’t blue-eyed. Most likely.

She was also Greek (mostly), so again lower likelihood of being blue-eyed.

Definitely not “non-zero possibility”, but the probability of her being blue-eyed is very, very low

Black Cleopatra is not historically accurate, but has been part of African American folklore since at least the early 20th century. Almost to the point of being a religious doctrine.

But even in better times, one didn't turn to the movies for historical accuracy.
