San Francisco Police Officers Association's vice president, Lt. Tracy McCray, has said the neighborhood where Cash App founder Bob Lee was murdered has already witnessed at least 12 homicides this year alone.
The city's Southern and Tenderloin Districts which have experienced rising crime rates this year have seen four stabbing incidents in the last week alone, including Lee's.
McCray says the police force is understaffed and the entire neighborhood is now at a tipping point.
'We are short staffed so just our presence in patrolling is severely lacking right now. To see a certain uptick in crime is to be expected but I think we are now at a precipice where we could go one way or the other,' McCray said.
Lee, 43, was stabbed several times in the chest as he walked in the city's Rincon Hill neighborhood at 2:35am, which is located in the Southern District, close to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
Lee was ignored by passersby, who did not help him as he bled out and collapsed to the ground.
Although the Rincon area, where Lee was killed, is generally quiet, residents and visitors alike have shared concern that they could easily become targets.
Some locals have noted how the area, which has multi-million dollar high-rise apartments, is where tech industry moguls, celebrities, and Golden State Warriors basketball team members have been known to live.
But downtown San Francisco has remained largely-deserted post-pandemic, and is n now famed for open drug abuse and violence, thanks to the progressive city's permissive policies.
The brutal killing in former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's staunchly Democrat electoral district has ignited concern over public safety and soaring homelessness in the city as a whole.

Any town’s a rough town in urban America, especially if you’re walkin’ around at 2:35 A.M., with half a heater on and no gat!
What on earth was he doing out walking at 2:35 am? There is more to this story.
That said, many of these tech moguls and companies support and donate to progressive Democrat candidates. The very ones who think it is A-OK for mentally ill homeless, drug-addled fentanyl addicts and violent criminals to "own" the streets of San Francisco. Their rights supercede yours to walk safely on public sidewalk and expect not to be knifed to death.
It’s still a horrible and senseless loss, poor guy :(
I had to be out and about in the wee hours a number of times due to work. He was rich and powerful, but you don’t generally get that way working 9-5
Uncivilized areas are like that and it’s growing.
Day or night blue states are not safe.
That was my question also.
Who cares....times have change...no one cares anymore...
But why walk? Why not be dropped off at the entrance to his building?
So what’s the police union going to do about it? There’s really fewer things in this world more pathetic than the police saying “yup, that’s a bad neighborhood”. Go fix it. Protect and serve.
