Artificial Intelligence Could Impact 80% of American Jobs in the Next Few Years. Is Your Job on the List?

“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

— Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park

OpenAI, the people who brought you ChatGPT, teamed up with the University of Pennsylvania recently to study the effects and possible fallout of the implementation of AI in the American workplace. Their findings were not good. Well, not good if you happen to be a person who depends on a job for the money you need to feed your family, buy clothes, and keep a roof over your head. On the other hand, if you are a one-percenter or someone who aspires to live off of government largesse for the rest of your life, the news is either ho-hum or excellent.

Researchers discovered that for many jobs, 15% of all tasks done by humans could be completed faster and with the same level of quality by AI.

According to a report in The Daily Mail, white-collar jobs are at the highest risk. For now. But trust me, I’ve seen the videos. If you are in the trades, it won’t be too long before you could get a robot “helper” that eventually becomes your robot replacement.

The study listed the jobs that would be endangered by AI. Leading the list in terms of percentage of exposure were mathematicians, tax preparers, accountants, auditors, financial analysts, legal secretaries, journalists, reporters, and writers and authors. Actually, many writers I have met over the years have been just this side of broke, anyway, so that’s no surprise. But web designers also made the list. So much for learning to code, I suppose. Although search marketing researchers and graphic designers are relatively safe by comparison. Investment fund and financial managers are not in the woods.

But if you lose your job to AI, you won’t have much to invest.

Insurance appraisers who investigate auto accident damage can also breathe easy. Dishwashers, barbers, electricians, lawyers, and astronomers are currently out of danger.

OK Folks, If you find your job on the threatened and endangered species list, don’t worry! Despite the ominous warning, The Daily Mail says that Sam Altman, who is the CEO of OpenAI, has stated in the past that ChatGPT “should be viewed as a tool, not a replacement for the human worker.”

But this latest research produced results similar to those of a Princeton study that put 20 professions at risk from AI, including teachers, telemarketers, school psychologists, and even judges.

Fundamentally all jobs are on the list. Even in retail. Walmart can direct workers to just simply work in the backroom and put stock on the floor. Any work that involves customer service can now be eliminated. So, as a Walmart worker, if I spend 1 1/2 hours helping customers and the rest stocking, I can now spend 8 hours/day stocking. That ultimately means less Walmart workers.

I can’t think of one job where people don’t communicate. Any time in a job that is spent in communication can now be eliminated and workers can be focused on other tasks. That means less workers, no matter how it is defined.

Artificial Intelligence is better than what we have now, NI “No Intelligence”. If we can upgrade lawyers, politicians, “scientists”, professors, and movie writers, then I welcome our new robot overlords. As long as they can make me a sammich.

Any laptop can crush the world champion chess player in chess. Yet today, the human professional chess tour is more popular and lucrative than ever.

All position that require elections to determine who gets the gig should be switched over to AI immediately. America would be a great place if the White House and The Nation’s Capitol Buildings were museums run by robots.

I notice that a job category that shows up a couple of times is “Proofreaders and Copy Markers”. I didn’t realize that anyone was still employed at that anywhere.

One place I could see it improving is the DMV. AI can’t be slower than it is now, unless they come up with a government worker AI that has an attitude.

Also, since December of last year, AI has become sufficiently good to imitate specific voices and images of people - at nearly freeware availability.

Stocking can be automated too, and AI will improve their performance greatly.

That means less workers, no matter how it is defined.

Its already like that, go to Home Depo and look for someone who you can ask a questions to.

Oh Imsure wish AI could take over my tax prep. I HATE doing my taxes. Just another reason to hate everything about the government’s interference in every aspect of life.

Keep in the trades kids. An AI chat bot can’t plumb a house or install an Air conditioner.

I have to be very pro-active when looking for any employees. But now, the businesses can set up kiosks at strategic points and the AI can give all the information you want.
