Home attendants take over dead 103-year-old woman’s NYC pad, threaten to flush her ashes: lawsuit
New York Post ^ | March 18, 2023 | Kathianne Boniello

A heartless home health aide and her family allegedly commandeered a patient’s Upper East Side apartment, refusing to let her daughter in after the 103-year-old woman’s death — and cruelly threatening to flush the old lady’s ashes down the toilet if she tried, according to court records.

Incredibly, the alleged squatters claim they have “succession rights” to the East 86th Street pad because they were like “family” to the dying woman, according to court papers.

Tatiana Abello, her mother, and sister have been living in the $ 2,088-a-month, two-bedroom, rent-stabilized pad for 18 months and counting since their elderly charge, Verra Katz, died in August 2021, legal papers show.

It’s unclear if they’ve paid any rent.

Tatiana Abello was hired in 2016 to help care for Katz, a one-time big band singer who performed under the name Verra Stuart, said her daughter, Alayne Skylar.

...

Abello brought her sister Victoria and mother, Olympia Oviedo-Reyes, into the 1,221-square-foot abode, said Skyler. The women hail from Colombia.

...

The Abellos allegedly refused to open the door for Skylar, who had been paying the rent.

They also refused to let cops inside, Skylar claims.

The NYPD typically will not interfere in housing disputes, leaving the cases to the courts.

“They were threatening to flush my parents’ ashes down the toilet,” claimed Skylar, who accused the Abellos in court papers of refusing to return her parents’ remains.

This is exactly why I don’t like my mother’s obsession with the “cleaning lady” of 35 years in our house. Last year we made her finally get her name off the postal service so no more mail, but just the fact she keeps coming and getting paid (for nothing) makes me worry she would try to pull this crap just the same.

I would strongly recommend you seeing a lawyer about that cleaning lady, and the potential effects of her long term relationship with your mom, especially if your mom is showing signs of senility.

She could claim rights to live there. She could, while you're away, get your mom to sign a will with her as beneficiary. She could know where your mom's bank/investment records are. Last but not least, have taxes been paid on her long term employment?

Yes, similar eyes.

There are some photos of Tatiana Nikolaevna (Romanov) that show just how strikingly pretty she was. Very exotic features.

A lot of Hispanics name their kids Russian or European sounding names. Not uncommon, at all.

People! Please! Give her a home!

I don't think your valuables would be safe with her in your house, and I don't even think this is really her, but the Post does -- or maybe they just liked the photo.

Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., is a Major League Baseball player, one of the best.

Also Phoenician names like Asdrubal Cabrera (Hasdrubal was a common name in ancient Carthage).

I just found a Wiki page on her. She was gorgeous, and a very decent person, it seems.

I hate to think of how life ended for her and the family. In that context, I don’t want to say what I’m thinking about how things are going in DC and FL. TPTB in DC will stoop to anything.

And the Bolsheviks killed the family’s little dog, too; and a couple servants who were with them, and the family doctor, as well; just for spite. They wanted to erase all trace of the Romanovs.

Tsar Nicholas was an incompetent (he had not been prepared to assume the throne when his father died; but, he felt it was his duty; and he allowed too many palace intrigues to further undermine his already tenuous grasp on leadership).

Thanks for the reply.

There is so much to this.

Taxes?

She’s been under the table all these decades….and further mom has been her sugar mama for buying cars, etc. their names on her loans, etc.

Don’t get me going. My mom has a problem discerning people who are basically scammers when it is personal. This woman is the oldest “relation”.

The only good thing I can say is my cousin has lived in the basement for 25 years, and can vouch this woman never actually lived there despite the insurance fraud with the postal address.

She is an idiot, but we aren’t sure if she is just wily enough to keep her gravy train going. She is a yes man and does whatever my mom wants, while not really doing any work.

In Russian “Tatiana’’ means ‘’Little Ann’’.

It's a term of endearment.
