There is no plac in the US that is totally safe from crime.

To believe that you live in a safe neighborhood is nothing more than denial.

Just stuff it in your pocket and walk away.
You can count it later.

It only takes a couple of seconds. I want to make sure I got what I asked for and I want it in my wallet, not stuffed in a pocket where I could lose it. As long as I don't see any predators I'm not concerned. It's not like I'm in NYC or LA.

Fine, I’ll take denial over fear.

“I find that walking around with $1000’s in cash is mostly an Asian thing”

Yeah, the jugging victim was prolly Chinese or Asian. They love cash businesses such as restaurants. Same as Arabs and others from the Middle East love to run gas stations. Cash $$$$ business. I knew a Christian Lebanese who did great in this business. And he was a very nice guy.

Depends on the MO of the criminal.

Some years ago, there were robbers in the DC suburbs targeting ATM users picking up cash during their commute into work at 5:00 am.

Since the maximum withdrawal is usually $300 and some of these criminals are prepared to use force up to and including murdering you, these crimes underscore how craven these scum are. It also points out how incompetent they are as robbers.

Unfortunately, between opportunistic lawyers and criminal-sympathetic prosecutors, even defending yourself properly as a licensed CCW holder poses a liability. Carry the weapon, buy the insurance. If you use one, you are going to need the other.

BTW, “jugging” is different from ATM robbery in that the criminals have been known to follow their victims for very long distances before an opportunity to strike presents itself. In the recent case of the Asian woman, the robbery team (19 YO male, 21 YO female) followed her 23 miles from the bank. They wouldn’t do that for a $300.00 payoff.

They profiled her. Asians are known to carry large amounts of cash, are smaller in stature and usually don’t carry firearms. Ditto for older persons as well and for the same reasons. A drive-up or inside teller window transaction with a count out and receiving an envelope with the money would be the tip-off.

This is basically the same MO for driveway robberies of persons returning home with purchases from high end stores.

It should be pretty easy for cops to catch “juggers” by sending an officer disguised as a civilian to a bank or ATM. He comes out flashing the cash and drives to a stake out location where backup is waiting.

That's not what police forces are for, silly.

Back in the 60s and 70s when college graduates went to Europe in droves, people who knew advised everyone to keep their real money inside their clothes, and have a fake wallet, and for women a fake handbag. Europe still hadn’t fully recovered from WW2, and there was a lot of poverty, and hence, street crime.

When I went to Italy in the 80s, things had improved; but travel advice still said that thieves on motor scooters would ride by and rip the handbag from your shoulder and keep going at speed, or even cut the strap of your purse or camera bag off your back in church as you knelt at the altar. So I hid money and passport in a zipper belt under my clothes, and carried my sunglasses, scarf and travel brochures in a shoulder bag.

I have lately resumed those practices in my own country.

I agree about counting it later. I’ve never had an ATM give an incorrect amount.

My Sig Sauer P-229 with 12 round mag never visits a ATM machine without me. Of course I maintain a very high degree of situational awareness.

” I have never gotten the incorrect amount.”

I have a friend who got an extra 20 out of the cash machine once. He asked for 40 and got 60. The receipt said 40 so the problem was the machine.

I guess I’m lucky. I have never lived where it wasn’t safe to use an ATM. I have a concealed carry permit and several pocket pistols, but have only carried a few times when visiting other locations. Small town New Hampshire is still quite safe. When I retired, I moved to SW Florida but avoid Tampa and Fort Myers. It’s sad really. I used to enjoy downtown Boston for hockey games and baseball.

There is 1 breakfast/lunch joint in town that takes cash only, which is kind of inconvenient since the majority these days would rather not carry a wad around.

I always carry cash.

And I always pay cash if at all possible.

I do not want to put one cent more than I must into the Too Big to Fail banks pockets.

I do not want to finance my own destruction for the sake of convenance.

If you were carrying common date silver coins I would applaud your efforts, but Federal Reserve Notes aren’t much better than a f****** credit card.

Federal Reserve Notes can be used anonymously outside of their system. Hard to do that with one of their credit cards.

If I knew merchants that accepted silver as payment I might trade with them.

But I do not know a single individual grocer or hardware store that accepts silver in payment.

Federal reserve notes are accepted in trade for better or worse (worse).

Paying in cash does not put money in the pockets of banks and it is less inflationary than credit cards.

Stop using ATMs!

One thing I've noticed, the past few weeks, is that at a bank at a local shopping center, there have been people parked right outside the (exterior) ATM terminals who didn't appear to be there to use the ATM but were there passing the time in some other way, such as eating lunch. I thought it was a strange place to park and eat lunch.

That is strange.

We were heading home, from dinner, the other night and saw a young gal....by herself....standing at an ATM machine....looked to be getting $$.

Couldn’t believe it.
