Two native Hawaiian men were sentenced to prison terms for a federal hate crime in the brutal beating of a white man who was trying to move into their remote Maui village.

A jury in November found that Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi and Levi Aki Jr. attacked Christopher Kunzelman because of his race — punching, kicking and beating him with a shovel in 2014, when he tried to move into their neighborhood of Kahakuloa.

“Haole” is a Hawaiian word with a complicated history.

LOL. Really? Imagine describing the "N" word as "a word with a complicated history.

Worry about the Fiji model where the black folk took over the island from the majority Indians. Brits brought them in and left. Coup. Think of it as a potential S. Africa(Apartheid) or Northern Ireland.

We need an excrement disturber to give them what’s theirs. Otherwise they’ll go the way of BLM. nobody see a pattern?

He was warned many times by haole’s and locals. My wife told him he was an idiot for thinking he would be accepted there. Kahakaloa is at the extreme end of hate for anyone not from that village - including other Hawaiian natives.

[I’m surprised this made national news.
I live in Rural Hawaii, but not on Maui.
I constantly deal with angry a$$hole Hawaiian’s
and way many more that are good neighbors
and friends.
It is simple. Mainland people move here and expect
Mainland services. Island life doesn’t work that way.
PERIOD!
Some Hawaiians want a return to a dead monarchy.
We are now a State in the USA, so that isn’t going to happen, the modern Democrat oligarchy here won’t tolerate it.
Locally this is what happens. Mainland a$$holes get convinced to leave, and Monarchists, will mix and breed out. Violent guys get taken care of quietly.
Been here 22 years and I don’t surf.
We have lots of guns.
Aloha.]

The perps look like hapas, at best. It’s weird how some of the biggest ethnic zealots are halfies.

I lived 22 years on Maui and that place is really bad. Lived up the road for 4 years and had property in a high end neighborhood. All haole. But that place - shoots bra - even locals stayed away. Cops too.

I take it that Christopher Kunzelman was a member of the Caucasian persuasion?

The only shock here is that they were prosecuted at all. Surfers who come to Hawaii have long been familiar with the tribal justice handed out by the locals. My brother lived on the North Shore for 14 years back in the 80’s and 90’s. Constantly worried about his safety and whether he would be “punched out” for taking off on the wrong wave. And he was 6’4” 240 lbs.

Mainlanders think they are just going to visit another state in the USA. In Hawaii, they use American Dollars, but that is about where US sovereignty ends.

Haole literally means “without spirit”.

When Captain Cook first encountered native Hawaiians the king approached him and brought his nose up to Cooks face in order to feel him breathing, almost as if he would kiss him. Of course Cook froze and stopped breathing, thus no spirit.

I’ve been to Hawaii several times and noticed the native people have a serious chip on their shoulders. Wonder if inbreeding was an issue many years ago to cause this attitude????????????

Here on BI there is a lot of places Cops won’t go unless someone is dead.
All islands are the same way, except perhaps Honolulu county
(Ohau).
I hear full auto gun fire often, but I don’t call cops.
Nobody is hurt no need.
Democrats can pass all the laws they want, but they can’t afford the economic and social costs to enforce them,
Ainokea.

Perhaps you are doing it wrong?
California raised Conservative, 20 years WA state high tech,
22 years Hawaii, I never had a Hawaiian get in my face.
and I peed on their sacred mountain, Mauna Kea. I worked there for a while. Hunted for Chuckar with Hawaiians there.
I had more problems with Mexicans in Paramount CA
and a few blacks in Compton CA.

It actually means “without breath”.
They could not speak the language.
My employer, Keck Observatory spent a
lot of money on native cultural instructors.

When I was visiting there I caught some slack about Haoles. I asked what the Hawaiian slang for Japanese was.

Yes I thought that also but someone corrected me way back. The King thought Cook was not alive and thus without a spirit. Possibly a ghost. The “ha” of Aloha means the “breath of life”. Prolly you are correct.

Aloha bradda!
