Haole literally means “without spirit”.

When Captain Cook first encountered native Hawaiians the king approached him and brought his nose up to Cooks face in order to feel him breathing, almost as if he would kiss him. Of course Cook froze and stopped breathing, thus no spirit.

It actually means “without breath”.
They could not speak the language.
My employer, Keck Observatory spent a
lot of money on native cultural instructors.
