IIRC during the Carter years the US tried to switch to the metric system and that failed quickly. I suspect this will be the same situation.

Every doctor form would need updating, It is also how they track heart, cancer diseases in the bloodline. At 74 I get to fill them out yearly.
Which means I saved my 55 yr old eldest from an unnessary Stent. Some stupid NPA said he needed. Low BS cause of the chest pain. Wake up call to go back to his Type 2 Diabetic diet. Removed the stress of managing a Fast Food place that can’t keep employees, who constantly job hop for who ever pays 50 cents more. Not jabbed, 1 bout of china flu, he treated.

The researchers are correct regarding it being non-binary.
Excepting those incredibly rare individuals born with two sets of equipment, generally there are three:
1) Male
2) Female
3) Mentally ill
Arguably, #3 is a subset of #1 and #2, but it still fits.
The researchers in this case likely fall into category 3.
