Scientists are reporting a breakthrough discovery: A $3-per-pill epilepsy drug may be used to “switch off” autism symptoms in mice, according to a new peer-reviewed study published Tuesday in Molecular Psychiatry journal.
Autism spectrum disorder is a complex developmental condition that impacts how an estimated 5.4 million (2.2% of) adults — and one in 44 children — in the United States perceives and socializes with others. It is often accompanied by abnormalities such as epilepsy or hyperactivity, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.
A team of experts at Germany’s Hector Institute for Translational Brain Research found that the medication lamotrigine — an anti-seizure drug first approved for use in the US in 1994 — was able to curb behavioral and social problems linked to the disorder.
Now, their findings are being hyped as the closest thing yet to a potential cure for humans.
“Apparently, drug treatment in adulthood can alleviate brain cell dysfunction and thus counteract the behavioral abnormalities typical of autism,” lead researcher and cellular biologist Moritz Mall said in a statement. “[This occurs] even after the absence of MYT1L has already impaired brain development during the developmental phase of the organism.”
Lamotrigine, which is sold under the brand name Lamictal, among others, is a medication used to treat epilepsy and stabilize mood in those who suffer from bipolar disorder.
The drug, which typically sells for just under $3 per pill, works by reversing changes to brain cells caused by a genetic mutation.
Scientists have spent years intensively searching for the molecular abnormalities that contribute to ASD and have identified MYT1L protein as one that plays a role in various neuronal diseases.

I’ve seen a couple of shows like that — “ripped from the headlines”. Terrible. Deliberately sabotaging a child’s future career, success, etc. Selfish.
Really. Don’t tell Fauci and his pharma co-conspirators. This drug will be illegal in a heartbeat.
$3 per pill today. If and when FDA approval comes for human use...that will skyrocket. Yes R&D is expensive. But so is greed.
Ironically, Zoomers are trying to find doctors to diagnose them with Autism.
As am I but I have no interest in being fixed. My wife on the other hand....
There are deaf people who want Cochlear implants banned because of the threat to “deaf culture”, mostly impacting children. It’s criminal to keep handicapped children handicapped.

Can you elaborate on this comment?
What experience do you have to make this claim?
Finally, can you provide a few links to this phenomenon where I can learn more?
Thanks.
I bet the pharma-bro, Martin Shkreli, is wishing he’d waited for this one.
EXACTLY
It has been said that autism is the undeveloped brain’s form of schizophrenia. Therefore when one encounters a drug which works against autism one should ask if it also works against schizophrenia. Sure enough, a search of “schizophrenia lamotrigine” turns up some promising results.

Conclusions
The efficacy of lamotrigine is most likely explained within the framework of a glutamate neuron dysregulation hypothesis, and may arise primarily through the drugs ability to influence glutamate transmission and neural activity in the cortex. The drug is likely to act through inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels, though other molecular interactions cannot be ruled out. Lamotrigine may add to or synergise with some atypical antipsychotic drugs acting on glutamate transmission; alternatively, they may act independently on glutamate and dopamine systems to bring about a combined therapeutic effect. We propose new strategies for the treatment of schizophrenia using a combination of anti-dopaminergic and anti-glutamatergic drugs.
I died of meningitis back in the late 1980’s, left my body, and went to Heaven. The strong profound Love experienced in Heaven did something to my consciousness that after I returned to my physical body, I perceive the consciousness of other people as a physical object. Their stored memories of their life experiences since conception are physical objects to my perception.
When people speak of the life review after death, that is merely their conscious awareness expanding beyond their physical bodies through the stored memories in their soul. These same memories are physical to me.
The same thing happened when a person states, “My life flashed before my eyes.”
The memories are stored in reverse sequence, thus earliest memories are stored furthest from the physical body.
I do in a few minutes what psychotherapy and depth psychology takes years to do, and often can’t do.
While this sounds woowoo, it is not. I spent 30 years researching, experimenting and studying neuroscience to understand it.
I usually feel the brain activity as well. For some reason I’m like a walking MRI.
It’s easy to prove by demonstration. I take total strangers and without them saying one word, I tell them what happened in their life.
It goes further, if the person closes their eyes, I say nothing, do not touch them, and stand many feet from their physical body, my touching a stored traumatic memory stimulates the stored memory which bridges to the person’s emotional subconscious and moves their physical body, often knocking them off their feet. It’s repeatable, every time I touch the same memory, even days later.
These traumatic memories become obstacles to Love in a person’s soul. They are influential in personality formation.
Feminine consciousness spins to the right and masculine consciousness spins to the left,(around a person). Memories are stored at the intersection of the two aspects of consciousness as holograms. (Memories are stored in the soul, not the physical body.)
Thus, I feel the exact location on the timeline of stored memories that the shift to a super masculine consciousness happened.(As the dominant aspect of consciousness changes at that time.)
The same is true of gender identity in gay and lesbian individuals.
There is no judgement, just greater understanding.
Religion(s) are theories and philosophies of the anatomy and physiology of the human soul. They are accurate for the most part, but incomplete. Since the soul is physical to me, it’s easy to understand the truths that they teach, and why.
I’ve done this with many different illnesses on thousands of people. Various types of cancer, brain tumors, strokes, MS, autism & Asperger’s Syndrome, schizophrenia, cutters & self mutilators, depression, anxiety.... the list is long.
I strongly believe in science, evidence based medicine, and religion. Miracles are merely science that we do not currently understand. Science is the process of understanding how God works.
God is any level of consciousness that exists above the level that I am at. There are many levels..
I have never met anyone else with this ability. Wish I would as it would help me understand myself better. I’m nobody special, just have an unusual ability that is as much a curse as a blessing.
I have an autistice son.
He’s on lamatrigine for seizers already.
Guess what?
He still has autism.
Don’t get your hopes up.

I am blown away! I believe every word you wrote!
I am a believer in a God of the universe who resides in Heaven (I have no comprehension of how it all works, though). I know he created us and all that is around us.
I am also a strong believer in evidence-based medicine -- not "snake oil" and have experienced success and failure with it more than once in my life.
By the way, your NDE experience (and heaven) is just one example of why I am a strong believer in our God and Heaven (there are many others).Of course, prayer and the words in a book that was written almost 3000 years ago sure help, too.
I have had a long-term interest in Near Death Experiences (NDE) and have tried to learn all that I could about them for many years. I have personally known people who have had them, and all the stories are pretty much the same.
I will send you a private message.
Thanks.
He is on lamotrigine for his seizures. My son specifically asked for lamotrigine because in addition to being an AED it also stabilizes mood. My son said it has helped with his number of seizures and mood.
I also take a high dose of it to lower the number of seizures I have.
