Why Navy Sailors STOPPED Jumping Off Aircraft Carrier Flight Decks
youtube ^ | 10 Feb 2023 | Not What You Think

US Navy sailors used to be able to jump off of aircraft carrier flight decks. They could even climb up the anchor chains and jump off the anchor ... all in the name of FUN! But FUN and SAFETY needs to be balanced. That's why drinking rules for Navy sailors are a lot more strict than they were a few decades ago. Swim calls and steel beach parties are still popular activities for US Navy sailors, but the dangers that are involved in some of these activities, and how the Navy tries to mitigate them...

I didn’t see it but I think he’s correct. Having worn a red vest it my earlier life. I would guess anybody working on deck would be wearing a color when on flight duty. It’s his you can look at a guy and instantly know what kind of job he’s responsible for.

Those sailors are in flight deck jerseys. Each color represents a job on the deck. It makes it easier to see who is where and who should or shouldn’t be where they are.

We used to have swimcalls on subs when I was in. Two men armed with M-16’s would stand shark watch on the fairwater planes. I was participating when our sub all went swimming in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle. I was 19 at the time, so it meant more to me then than it would today, but it is a great memory, as we had been underwater for two and a half months without ever seeing, touching or smelling anything outside the sub. It was a rewarding experience.

We never had a swim call. I’d heard about them. But they were gone on my frigate by ‘91 for sure.

My father did the initiation about the same time. We have photos and description in letters, but the certificate has been lost. USS Mississippi (BB-41), New Mexico-class battleship.

Good God, who would want to serve on a 1915 submarine?

Das Boot does a good job of showing how hellish old subs were, imagine 1915.

Sailors say the worst time was always Thursday, that is when they drew lots to see whose turn it was in the barrel.

This old Army guy loves to watch carrier flight deck videos. If I knew 50+ years ago what I know today I probably would have gone Navy.I thought red are ordinance, purple are fuel, white are the paddles and yellow are the shooters.

May God bless them all wherever they are. They were so much better than what we have now.

Might be a bit different on a carrier deck as opposed to our small little helo deck on my Knox class frigate. But I wore red and sat on the #1 fire hose party. When I asked why the #2 hose party was so far away from the helo deck, I was told that was in case the #1 hose party got blown off the deck. Lol.

The feel/smell of fresh air after all that time is something I never would have thought about.

Very interesting, thank you.

___________

The fresh air, because the crew has been breathing charcoal filtered air for such a long time, stinks worse than a paper mill and kind of makes you nauseous for about 30 seconds. You still appreciate it and you’re over that within a minute.

That product hadn’t been invented at the time I was being aired out on the flight deck and incensed with the sulfur-laden exhaust from the stacks. Hahaha

No kidding.

At 23:49 you can hear FDR talking about the Marblehead, the Houston, and Dr. Wassil in a fireside chat.

Civilians shouldn’t be allowed to comment on the military at all. What an idiotic post ever presented on Free Republic. You should be ashamed of yourself for completely defaming the United States Navy. You should instead learn what and why those colors are worn instead of running your lazy mouth.
