The stepfather of Tyre Nichols has called for criminal charges against the paramedics who appeared to stand by after he was savagely beaten by police, while two deputies who responded after the altercation also face investigation.
Released on Friday, video of the January 7 incident in Memphis shows at least 10 cops and two paramedics milling about casually for nearly 20 minutes as Nichols lies on the ground critically injured. He died in hospital three days later.
'Everyone -- the fire department, paramedics that came out that stood around and didn't do anything -- they're just as guilty,' Nichols' stepfather Rodney Wells told ABC News following the release of the video.
'Everyone that was active in the whole scene, the whole video, should be charged,' he added. Five Memphis cops have already been charged with second-degree murder.
Meanwhile, the sheriff of Shelby County, which includes Memphis, said that after viewing the video, he is suspending two deputies who responded to the scene following the beating, which began with a traffic stop.
Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. said in a statement: 'Having watched the videotape for the first time tonight, I have concerns about two deputies who arrived on the scene following the physical confrontation between police and Tyre Nichols.'
Bonner said he had launched an internal investigation into the two deputies, adding that they had been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the probe.

They were telling him to “Get on the ground!”
But he was already on the ground.
Did they really mean, “Lie face down on the ground” or “Lie down on your belly”?
If so, might they have said that instead?
They seemed perfectly willing to go into verbal intimidation mode, more or less immediately, but not willing to be specific about what they wanted him to do.
Then at some point with Tyre continuing to turn his head around like an owl, protesting verbally, but not quite physically, multiple officers went into physical intimidation mode. But they obviously never effectively restrained him. So the physical violence, again, seems to have been intended to motivate him to become mentally and physically submissive, and then voluntarily assume a face-down or belly-down posture on the pavement.
Instead he got scared, physically escaped their tender physical ministrations, and ran.
For that he had to die?
He was young and had never planned out in his mind how to conduct himself if one or more seemingly roided-out police officers were to stop him and jump ugly with him for no apparent reason.
He had never happened upon Chris Rock’s sage advice. And wow did he pay a price for choosing unwisely.
Agreed.
“If Tyre just pulled over and cooperated he would still be alive. What was he running from?”
assuming that’s true, it’s still not a death sentence offense by being beaten to death ...
When I see the unmarked cars and the aggressive manner of the police officers from the first moment of their interaction with the guy, I wonder if perhaps he suspected they weren’t police officers, but were there to carjack him.
I agree that there has to be something missing here. I have also heard that he may have been dating one of these guys ex girlfriends.
Who knows? There has to be some other reason why 5 large guys could not cuff one smaller man without feeling the need to beat and brutalize him.
Jackbooted thug cops need to be prosecuted, jailed and when appropriate - executed.
We have no way of knowing what you say is true. We also have no way of knowing why 5 men used this kind of force on an unarmed man.
Was there another reason these guys were after this guy?
They’ll be getting some supervisors too. Chief is safe, of course, she learned from Atlanta.
That's been happening in downtown Memphis lately.
I don't blame him for running -- he was close to his mother's house. And they were brutalizing him. He almost made it.
The kid didn’t have a record. He was a FedEx employee (had a real job).
“Jackbooted thug cops need to be prosecuted, jailed and when appropriate - executed.”
Look up 18USC242. If the Feds want to they can charge these cops and if they’re convicted ask for the death penalty.
And get it.

Most important: 6) Understand that the cops enjoy hurting and killing people. They are out looking for an excuse.
The media wants their big story in the middle of winter, and democrats need a distraction. So they’re going to pour gasoline on it.
That’s my suspicion. Perhaps the “Scorpions” are on the take.
It’s pronounced am-bah-lance
forming a P is just too time consuming
Well maybe if these people started doing their damn jobs. Really the don’t give a shit attitude of everybody we put in uniforms is what’s causing this. They don’t care. People die. And they still don’t care.
