You may have noticed that the Academy Award nominations were announced this week.
It is also notable that few cared.
That's really too bad because one of America's great cultural contributions to the world is our film industry.
Well, it used to be, anyway.
Gone are the days of the glamorous movie star and incredible films. Today we have superheroes blowing stuff up and dinosaurs rampaging through San Diego - frightening everybody except the homeless who are not moving from the Gaslight District, no matter what.
The televised Oscar show will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who'd better watch himself, or an audience member might pull a Will Smith.
Kimmel is your essential wise guy, but he understands the woke world in which he lives. As Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young once sang: "Step out of line, and they'll come to take you away."
Anyway, few care about politically correct Hollywood these days. Don't believe me? Okay, what was the best picture last year?
It was CODA. Didn't see it. But I'm sure it was woke.
See you tonight for the No Spin News.
I worked on the production of that year’s show, and the preceding year as well. I was up in one of the press rooms when it happened, and I don’t think it was pre-planned. Although the Academy was watchful for some kind of incident because the previous year was when Sasheen Littlefeather showed up to accept Marlon Brando’s award. That was stressful behind the scenes, lol.
Oh, and I have never watched one single Oscar show since I worked on it.
Ricky Gervais opening to the Golden Globes a few years back is a classic because so many of the things he was “joking” about were true.
Especially the part about how many are pedophiles.
Many movies were spectacular in the 40s & 50s.
So was air travel, quite the experience, where passengers were treated as near-royalty. Much above the cattle-cars-in-the-sky we’ve had for year.
[The air passengers, by and large, also comported themselves in a manner consistent with said treatment.]
The last “best picture” I saw was in 2011...Argo. I thought that was pretty good. The rest of the movies I watch aren’t even on the radar anymore. Hollywood sucks.
Haven’t seen it. They already did an Elvis biopic with Kurt Russell and we didn’t need another one.
lol,... last time I WENT to the Oscars Carson was host!
For what it’s worth, I agree with your post.
...and dressed up to fly! My brothers and I fly east at my age 9 and I wore a sport coat and tie as did my 3 year older brother and younger one... ymmv
What’s a “movie”?
Movie is short for ‘Moving Pictures’, some of which even have accompanying sound as well, call ‘Talkies’, and even some in full color!...............
When I was a kid we went to the movies on Saturday afternoon Double features with news in the middle. Long lines to get in.
Will kimmel host in his usual blackface?
And when they kept both mouth and legs closed.
Dressed up, indeed! Suits, dresses, hats, all nice. And such good grooming also extended to curteous behavior, by passengers and crew alike.
Can't make the "losers" feel bad about themselves, by referring to someone as a "winner", you know.
“It is also notable that few cared.”
or even knew it happened ... hard to care for something you don’t care enough to know that it even happened ...
the last “oscars” i watched was the “Adult Film Awards” scene on “Boogie Nights”, which is BRILLIANT satire of the actual oscars ...
CODA was a great movie, in my opinion. We have family members in the Deaf community and it ran true to life, and it was very well acted with a good plot.
