OK, as I've gotten older, I now realize how important sleep is and I'm not getting much of it of late.
I'm about 190lbs and sleep with a CPAP machine. I bought a Sealy mattress (queen-foam) this past summer and it was nice and firm for awhile. Now, it's like sleeping in a crevice and very uncomfortable. I like a firm mattress that holds its firmness with little or no sinkage.
Any mattress gurus out there that can give me some guidance? I have $1K to burn. I just want my sleep back as I'm miserable.
The hotel quality is the firmest possible.
We bought a Sealy Tempurpedic several months ago and are very happy with it. For us, a foam mattress is not firm enough and it is too hot.
We bought it from Mattress Firm. They push what is on hand but they have a wide selection and good prices. We tried what was on the floor and hated them all. Crossed our fingers and ordered a Tempurpedic. Free delivery. That worked for us.
Good luck.
Rip off industry.
Massive price increases with decreasing quality.
“The most comfortable bed I had was a cheap inflatable and a 3” memory foam topper”
Sounds like a good idea. We’ve always had the conventional box spring mattresses. Their downfall is that they eventually sag. I think it’s the stuffing on top of the springs, not the springs, that sag. We recently put a 3” memory foam mattress pad on top. We like that but the sag is still there.
The inflatable is sag-proof I suppose, so I’ll seriously consider your scheme in the future.

Super springs also great for anything one might do on a bed besides sleeping, like jumping around and stuff.
Personal experience only, we have two queen memory foam mattresses. One is an “Egg” and one is a Casper that we bought from Costco. I love the Casper and so does my wife. She also sleeps with a CPAP, and I’ve got several joint and back issues. Good luck with the process.

Orthopedic EuroTop Mattress
(two-sided)
$1649
If you put an allergen-free cover on it, it will last 12-14 years with flipping every 6-12 months.
About $11/month cost.
It’s not going to make the 1000$ mark but you might find a used one (ymmv) but our sleepnumber is one of my favorite things
Wife doesn’t care much for it but I can keep my side dialed up to 100 (max) and you could just about play quarters on it
I’m a little bigger than you and have minor nagging back problems where a firm bed is basically a necessity
The “sleep number” is worthless. Too light and moves around.
Bought a “Purple” for my son and he likes it. I’ve taken a nap on it and thought it is pretty good. But a nap is not the same as sleeping on it for a few weeks.
Once you’re over 60 sleep isn’t easy. A good mattress helps but you’ll never again sleep like a teenager.
One thing I know for dead certain. ANY mattress the inflates with air will leak and you will have a devil of a time finding that leak. At least water beds made that obvious.
You get what you pay for.
We also bought a naturepedic a few years ago but was too soft for me and while we planned on getting a firmer set of innards for my side we just switched back to the sleep number and my youngest if the only elementary age kid I know with a 4k$ king bed but you can adjust the guts of these and they are very well made
Did the same... even upgraded the foam/temperpedic. I’m not sure if its the bed frame or mattress? Anyone looking for a new mattress, should invest in bed boards until you’ve found one you like, single size is $30 on amazon. While visiting my daughter, I slept on a very lovely medium firm innerspring mattress with a very deep pillow top. This was exactly what my back ordered. She lives in Switzerland, so the brand isn’t important... but it made me miss my old perfect sleeper!
I had problems sleeping, became a carnavor, I just eat meat, eggs butter bacon, lost 40 lbs and now I sleep good. Watch Dr Ken Berry and Kelly Hogan on YouTube. You will get off that machine.
We got Sleep Number in 2020 and aren’t impressed.
I hate the mattresses that appeared a several years ago — the super thick one with a pillowy top.
I like the old ones that you can rotate and FLIP. When we dump the Sleep Number — soon, I hope — we’ll look for a traditional style. There’s a company here in Knoxville, Brother’s, that custom makes traditional mattresses and we’ll be seeing them.
I got a Sealy “Extra Firm” and it is way too hard by itself - extra coils to prevent side sagging, etc. - solved it with a My Pillow Topper - solid mattress and slight softness for the top layer.
What I like about these beds, air doesn’t degrade like foam or other materials. As expensive as beds are, you don’t want to have to buy them again every few years...
I’m with you. Tried all the types. Returned to Shifman two-sided, inner spring mattress (and box spring). Love it.
I buy the foam mattresses from Wallyworld, Last one was just over $200 for Queen sized. After a couple yrs I replace it.
They sleep just as good as the high priced ones. I am heavy so it does create a cavity after a couple yrs.
