“We stuffed ourselves into one room,” Purdy said of his four-member family’s living arrangements.
Their share of the monthly rent was $2,300. When rent increased, the Purdys realized that they could no longer afford to live in Hawaii.
It’s increasingly common for Hawaii residents to be priced out of the Aloha State, where the median price for a single-family home topped $900,000 during the pandemic. On Oahu, the most populous island and where Honolulu is, the median price is more than $1 million.
According to 2021 population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, the biggest growth of Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander populations was in Clark County, Nevada, which includes Las Vegas, and Sacramento County, California. The biggest decline of Native Hawaiian residents was in Honolulu.
Hawaii residents are spending on average 42.06% of their income on rent, which is the highest of any state, according to a Forbes Home analysis. California ranks second, but at a much smaller proportion of income going toward rent: 28.47%.
Estimates from the American Community Survey showed that in 2011, there were about 296,400 Native Hawaiians in Hawaii and about 221,600 on the continental U.S. Just a decade later, those numbers flipped. In 2021, there were about 309,800 Native Hawaiians in Hawaii and about 370,000 in other states.

“ How is that?”
It has always been my understanding that native Hawaiians were disrespectful of mainland Americans. They even have a slur for us. Of course we would be considered racist if we responded in kind.
You forgot steal everything not nailed down.
Its the old “get rich or get out”.
The solution is in restoring the monarchy and giving all the property to the natives as the haloes die off. Make it a protectorate. Eliminate 2 senators. Win-win.
The natives did it in Fiji. Indians imported by the Brits outnumbered the locals so the military staged a coup. Hawaii for the Hawaiians. Sounds catchy.
I wonder if they’re gonna bring their racist crap with them?
Not to Hawaii
Shaka, Bra!
Perhaps it is time to reconquer them?
It’s like the ultimate in gentrification, not just pricing them out of a neighborhood but off a whole island haha
Also Vegas is super fun to visit, but I’ve heard it’s terrible to actually live there
>I wonder if they’re gonna bring their racist crap with them?
Of course they will, and that’s why they will be treated like brown island trash
THE most racist people I’ve ever been around; they may hate even more people than American blacks!
In 2007 I was at a Lūʻau in Kauai and the talked incessantly about the “golden people” of Hawaii. According to them the “golden people” of Hawaii includes only Asians and Pacific Islanders, not any white people. They even have a “Kill Haole Day” which is the term for bullying incidents that occurred in some public Hawaii schools, when non-white students would harass and attack white students.
Here in Los Angeles a single-family home at $900,000 is a 40 year old fiver upper or as the agents call it a handy mans special.
You folks are missing something. Leftists prey on these resentments and we just react. Do it my way. Give the power back to native Hawaiians and make it a monarchy + protectorate. Eliminate statehood and the 2 rat senators that go with it.
