Tipping culture in the United States varies greatly from other countries where workers are paid a fair wage.
Instead, it falls on customers in the US to make up for the shortcomings of our government and employers who don't fairly compensate workers.
That being said, there are times when a large tip seems a little excessive and disproportionate to the service received.
That issue is what prompted one TikTok user @thejmancomesquick to post a video of himself complaining after an awkward encounter at a pizza restaurant.
He was asked to tip 20% for takeout pizza. “What is with everyone thinking they deserve a tip now?” He questioned.

This crap will kill carry out pizza. Restaurant people have been known to spit on food and worse. Letting takeout staff shake down customers might cost owners business.
I tip 10% for takeout, 20% for full service. Restaurant employees get paid crap. If it is a restaurant where I know the wait staff and manager, 20% is my minimum. Takeout (not pizza) requires some effort to package and check.
Totally agree! It’s out of hand. Everyone is asking for tips now days. Sorry ... I save tips for those that actually tend to my table in a dine-in restaurant that get paid a crappy hourly wage that tip earners get. I’m not tipping some $10 per hour pizza counter person.

During Covid-19, I was willing to tip 10% for take-out mostly to help keep my favorite local restaurants going during the lockouts. Somebody still cooked the food, someone else boxed and bagged it for me.

Yea customer service is the pits. I walked a bank yesterday and the only employee in the place asked me “how can I help you?”. I’m here to cash a check, said I as I reached for my wallet.

I usually do give a dollar tip for takeout at a pizza place, Subway and places that fix your food ‘to order, if they are pleasant and efficient. And let them keep the coin change at the fast food joints like McDonalds, Taco Bell, Sonic etc.
But if they demand or even merely ask for a tip, they don’t get anything, AND they lose a customer forever.

A Japanese place I USED to go to now has only take-out. When you pay with a credit card, the choices are 15%, 20% and 25%. This is a restaurant where the owner usually mans the counter.
People say that many places divide the tips equally among all, and this has to be true for pick-up and places where there are no waiters.
Doesn’t that just mean you are tipping the owner, or corporate?
If we are all paying all of the employees ourselves, which means the owners are only paying a small token amount, doesn’t that make us suckers?
Let’s hope our plumbing companies don’t adopt this business model.
I always tell them I left my glasses in the car and can't read the screen. They don't have the guts to ask for it verbally then I hand over the credit card and ask about the Senior discount.
A tip is for good service (which is expected, and generally accepted as being 15%). Less than good service is deserving of less of a tip, better service is deserving of a larger tip.
NO ONE is entitled to a tip - unless you walk in to a restaurant and are informed (on the menu, for example) that an X% gratuity will be added for parties of more than 6, for example. Then, by merely ordering, you have agreed to that tip. Beyond that one example, the servers generally get what they deserve. Yes, sometimes people are cheap bastages, but most people aren’t (and they’re balanced off by very good tippers).
