Eight high school students in Texas have been hospitalized after their football coach forced them to do 400 push-ups in an hour without any breaks.
Rockwall-Heath High School Head Football Coach, John Harrell, has been put on administrative leave after he reportedly forced students to do 300 to 400 push-ups during an eighth-period athletic class on Friday.
A mother, who did not want to be identified, claimed the football players were forced to do the intense workout without water breaks, according to Fox 4 News.
She said her son was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis - the breakdown of muscle tissue that can release damaging proteins into the bloodstream, which can cause kidney damage or failure.
It is unclear what the other seven students were diagnosed with. None of the players' identities have been released.
Principal Todd Bradford addressed the situation on Monday, writing in a letter to student-athlete parents: 'On Monday, January 9, 2023, several parents reported that their student(s) subsequently needed medical attention, and in some cases, hospitalization. Please know the District immediately implemented measures to address the situation and provide support for our students.'
It also advised parents to inform their students to see the trainer if they experience not being able to 'bend or extend your arms, unable to lift arms above your head, dark urine (tea or cola-colored), and sharp arm pain,' as well as, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, confusion, or lethargy.
'Student safety is a top priority for Rockwall IDS and we will continue to take immediate and appropriate measures in the best interests of our students as we address this situation,' the letter said.
The Dallas-based school has also launched a third-party investigation into the incident and said students who attended the class on Monday did a light, nonstrenuous workout.

“Yep. All a bunch of Al Bundy types, reimagining their “glory days” from 40 years ago.”
Lol - yep, and whatever over-the-top idiocy the coach demanded, they lapped it up and asked for more.
We had Black Flag days at Sill went I went through in 1990. They’d just smoke us in the barracks.
After 25 or 50 I would of walked... seeya!
There really is no argument here.
If the coach sent 8 kids to the hospital, then he is obviously not qualified for this work.
I had paid enough attention to know that it was mediocre, and for MHS very poor.
When he called it quits, Mr. K put in an application that he believed was serious for the position
Were the Sheldon titles after the introduction of the additional division? IIRC Sheldon was among those placed in the second-biggest.
Do you always yell?
How long a break did you take between sets of 20?
If, as the article seems to state, they had an hour to do it, then the situation outlined for the players was rather different than what you experienced.
Why were they sent to the hospital? To gain evidence to back up the abuse claims of someone supporting the matriarchy. Maybe they needed a massage and anxiety break between each push up.

THE POST WWII GENERATION. ALL THE GUYS WANTED TO BE PARATROOPERS, OR RANGERS. TODAY’S YOUNG GUYS WANNA BE RAP STARS, AND VIDEO GAME HEROES.
I GAVE A GIFT TO MY NEPHEW WHEN HE WAS 13, A FINE POCKET KNIFE, MY SISTER (HIS MOTHER, A CERTIFIED LIBTARD!) WENT NUTS.
“ARE YOU CRAZY?! HE’LL CUT HIMSELF!”
“HE’LL LEARN NOT TO.”
THE WORLD HAS CHANGED. THE ARMY HAS NOTED THAT THE BONES OF MANY CURRENT RECRUITS, BECAUSE OF A SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE, ARE SO WEAK THAT THERE IS A MARKED RISE IN FRACTURES...NOT SO FOR CHINESE RECRUITS.
I LOOKED AT THE CURRENT STANDARDS FOR PASSING THE ARMY PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST...3 OUT OF 4 CORPSES COULD PASS!
THINGS AIN’T GOOD.
If this isn’t your conspiracy and they actually ended up in the hospital, then the instructor didn’t know what he was doing.
I would have refused. Never let anyone abuse you.

BRAVO! ALL HONOR TO YOU!!!
We have to acknowledge that it’s kinda badass that they could do 300-400 pushups in an hour though. Well, if their form was proper. :-)
When I was in high school (back in the late 60s) I set the school record for push-ups - 200 in a row. It only took me about 3 minutes - since the strategy was to do them quick before my muscles gave out.
But they were full regulation push-ups and it was a serious school competition with a couple hundred people watching and cheering us on. One of my wrestling coaches put his fist on the floor under my chest to make sure I went low enough, and there was a bar above me to make sure I went all the way up each time.
Still, I think 400 in an hour would have been very tough even for me, because once your muscles are that depleted - you are done for the day. I can only imagine what torture that would be for someone that could only do, say, 50 at a time. That would mean you would totally exhaust yourself doing 50 - and then you have to do it all over again 8 times in an hour!
guy sounds like an a hole. Hope someone’s mom bitch slaps him for this.
calm down, you seem deranged. we hear ya.
400 in 1 hour. That is no big deal for high school football players. Must be a lot more to this story.
I have no idea how the high school football thing shook out. Marshfield’s attendance waned, so Sheldon was probably a bigger market. Pete Susick was a hard act to follow. I didn’t know he’d played for the Packers. Chet Haliski had been drafted by the Rams, I believe, but the attack on Pearl Harbor caused him to go into the military, instead.
I can post hot links from my laptop. But when I do the identical HTML from my phone it never works.
Was coach charged with manslaughter.
Read John Gunther’s Obit of him (John amd I were good friends in high school)-—he was drafted by the Packers, but also went to war instead—and was sent home after being wounded. His wound ruled out the NFL so he ended up coaching at Marshfield instead—odd to have the stadium named after a NB grad who, it turns out, remained geographically close to his roots.
I NEVER YELL. I HAVE EYE PROBLEMS (SOON TO BE CORRECTED, I HOPE) THAT CAUSE ME TO TYPE IN CAPS SO I CAN SEE AND PROOF WHAT I AM TYPING. I MAKE MANY ERRORS.
I HAD NO BREAKS OTHER THAN RISING AND SMILING.
(THE SMILE WAS NEVER WIPED OFF MY FACE.)
THE NUMBER OF PUSHUPS IS NOT THE FACTOR HERE, IT’S THE CUMULATIVE EFFECT THAT MATTERS. GRANTED, I DID MINE WITHOUT PAUSE OR REST, IN A SPAN OF MINUTES AND PROBABLY NOT 400,BUT 400 PUSHUPS FOR A TEEN, OR ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER, IS A FORMIDABLE TASK.
HAVE YOU EVER ATTEMPTED IT? IN YOUR PRIME COULD YOU HAVE DONE SO? I’M THINKING NO, AND NO. BUT YOUR ARMCHAIR IS COMFORTABLE, YES? THAT’S WHAT COUNTS.
