I have to admit, I am not very good at recognizing people, out of context. Sounds like you have had some great interactions.
One of my favorite interactions happened way back in the '70's . I went to the market, came out to a dead battery. Guy was loading groceries into his car.
"Excuse me, you would not happen to have a pair of jumper cables would you?
He did and we soon had my car started. He was loading his cables back into his car, when it dawned on me who he was.
"You're Bill Dana Aren't you? (p> "No, I think you confused me with someone else. My name is Jose Jimenez."
He winked as he said that and bid me a good day. The "jose Jimenez" line was a signature routine for him and you need to be as old as me to catch the joke.
Elon Musk birthed in ZA
Vagabond to Canaduh, and became Canaduhian.
Then Silicon Sewer, Californicatia, and became US Citizoid.
Then moved to Texas because .....well..... because he’s smart. So now he’s a Texan.
Then bought crime scene known as Twitter and said he’d spring Trump out of Twitter Jail.
Whatever, Mel, Keith, Elon, etc. they are all fine by me.
Yeah it’s all good.
Met William Christopher years ago on a flight out of L.A. He was astonished when I addressed him by his real name. He told me that when people run into him anywhere, it’s: “You’re Father Mulcahy!”
I remember Jose Jimenez, though I was a kid when Dana was doing that. Imagine the screeching if he were to record those routines today.
In a similar vein: I and three others were standing outside, in line at a restaurant in Hollywood. One of the tables in the restaurant was right next to the window. Seated, facing the window was a character actor. One of those guys whose face you know, but not the name.
One of the guys in the group was doing the "Hey do you know who that is? What's his name?" He was not being shy about it and it was rather obvious to those seated with the actor.
I moved over next to my friend and said: "His name is William Windom" (Twighlight zone, To Kill a Mockingbird and many more).
As I said this, I looked over at Mr. Windom, who was looking at me, he then mouthed:
"Thank you" and nodded his head.
It was like: At least somebody knows my name.
LOL. You got that right!
It wasn’t anything in the body. It was the clickbait title that I have seen hundreds of times on social media. I come here to get away from that type of crap. The only thing missing was “and you won’t believe what happened next!”
It must have been distilled from an internet click-bait story. Those sequenced things where you have to click through dozens of page loads, with a ton of ads for each couple of sentences, and with lots of traps to click on to something irrelevant.
Reading it here was an interesting exercise. Even though it could be read straight through without the ads and constant clicks, the dragged out pace still made it hard to continue!
I had a sorta similar experience many years ago in Beverly Hills... in a small Greek import shop on Little Wilshire, an elderly man was having trouble paying with a check (back when people actually paid with checks at retail stores). He had no ID with him and wanted to make a purchase before flying home to the UK in the morning. The young Greek girl at the register had no idea who he was, but duh, it was Sir Lawrence Olivier. I was able to “vouch” for him, and she took his check. Not surprising to run into a celebrity in Beverly Hills, though.
That’s awesome. Sir Lawrence was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, actors of all time.
I’d pay for his groceries and thank him.
Some of our greats are real down to Earth when we meet them in casual ordinary settings.
Friend and I got on an elevator in Manhattan back in the 2000s. Walter ‘Fritz’ Mondale was alone with his wife and one other in the cab. I looked down not wishing to disturb his privacy. Friend and I were both Reagan supporters, but friend couldn’t resist, out of respect, he reached his hand out and said, “Glad to see you Mr. Vice-President. Of course, former VP. I shook his hand as well.
It’s difficult to know what to do. These people deserve privacy.
Nope, cannot stand “country” music. We used to call it suicide songs in the service. Those that make that stuff are as unknown as grunge music types.
Blue grass I can listen to.
Had Terry Bradshaw in front of me at Safeway in Kona. He had an enormous amount of food. I joked that he was buying for a team.
He got to payment and the checker asked if he had a Safeway discount card. He did not and someone offered to use his.
Saved Terry over $200.
The war on innovation which allows the cash cow to stay funding the wealthy is a well documented reality. Lawfare is the democrat party’s favorite weapon on behalf of their wealthy benefactors.
A Mondale story from an unimpeachable source who was present and who shall remain nameless:
After leaving the vice presidency, Walter Mondale joined a lobbying law firm in DC. There was a bank branch on the lobby level of the building, and many of the people who worked in the building did their banking there for convenience. Shortly after joining the firm, Mondale was in the bank. He stepped up to the teller's window, presented a check and asked for cash.
The teller asked him for ID. This flummoxed him. I suppose at that point he still had a driver and it had been years since he had driven himself. It's possible that he didn't even have a driver's license. Anyhow, he was asked for ID and he looked stricken. One of the bank managers, however, had had an eye on him since he walked in, and the manager came flying across the lobby: "cash the check! cash the check!! cash the check!!!!!!!!" Mondale got ribbed about the incident for years to come. Always took it like a sport and got a good laugh about it.
Wow! I had heard some Roy Clark before- but that was amazing. Thank you for sharing.
I’m about two and half years into learning how to play, I think I’ll need about another 20 or more years to be half that good.
What a wonderful story! Thanks for posting, and Happy New Year, Hostage.
You must be so much fun at a party.
I like Keith Urban......he seems down to earth. Wonderful lady too.....bless her Dear Lord......;)
Wawa has great coffee, and it's less expensive than Starbucks, so that may be why she goes every morning. I certainly did when I lived near one.
